Nearly a month after firing James Comey from the post of FBI Director, President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced that he will nominate Christopher Wray, a former Justice Department official in the Bush Administration, as his choice for head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

There's no more information in the two-sentence tweet that ends, "Details to follow".

Trump's announcement comes the day before Comey is scheduled to testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Moscow's alleged interference and any potential ties to Trump's campaign or associates.

That potential bombshell testimony - in which Comey also may address whether Trump urged him to halt or ease up on an investigation into former national security advisor Michael Flynn and his ties to Russian Federation - takes place before the Senate Intelligence Committee.

Wray will have to go through a Senate confirmation hearing and vote to officially be appointed to the position, but in the meantime, here's what you need to know about Trump's pick.

George W. Bush nominated him as the assistant attorney general for the criminal division in 2003.

Wray is a traditional choice for the job.

Wray's nomination is sure to be caught up by questions from both parties - but especially Democrats - over whether he will be able to be independent of Trump, how he will handle the investigation into Russia's election meddling and how he will interact with Mueller. During tense times, Christie said he would make one call: to Wray. "He has absolute integrity and honesty, and I think that the president certainly would not be making a mistake if he asked Chris Wray to be Federal Bureau of Investigation director", Christie said.

One of the questions hanging over Christie was about a dozen text messages he exchanged with a former staffer during legislative testimony by officials from the Port Authority of NY and New Jersey, which manages the bridge, in 2013.

He entered private practice in the state of Georgia in 1993, before joining the US Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Georgia in 1997.
