Trump to nominate ex-Justice Department official to lead Federal Bureau of Investigation

Parmenio Sano | 08 Giugno, 2017, 12:44

Wray, a former assistant attorney general who led the Justice Department's criminal division under George W. Bush, started as an attorney at Atlanta-based legal giant King & Spalding in 1993 and served between 1997 and 2001 as an assistant US attorney in Atlanta, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

Trump in a tweet on Wednesday described Wray as "a man of impeccable credential".

He acted as former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie's personal attorney during the "Bridgegate" controversy, an investigation into the closure of lanes on George Washington Bridge in an alleged effort to spite political opponents.

"I know that he will again serve his country as a fierce guardian of the law and model of integrity once the Senate confirms him to lead the FBI", Trump said. He so just hours before four intelligence officials are due to give testimony on Capitol Hill about the Russian Federation investigation, and a day before Comey is himself scheduled to appear before the Senate Intelligence Committee. That probe is now being overseen by a special counsel.

Wray, a graduate of Yale University and Yale Law School, was nominated by President George W. Bush as Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Criminal Division and served in that position until 2005.

Wray works at the King & Spalding law firm.

Thomas O'Connor, president of the FBI Agents Association, said that group looked forward to meeting with Wray and learning about his views on the bureau and the challenges agents face.

The decision was being closely watched not only for who will lead the nation's premier law enforcement agency, where employees are still reeling from Comey's firing, but also for signals about how the president will forge ahead amid the swirl of developments set off by the dismissal.

Former Connecticut U.S. Senator Joe Lieberman had been in the running for the top job at the F.B.I. but withdrew his name from consideration last month. Two former Christie aids were convicted for closing the lanes to punish a mayor who wouldn't endorse Christie.

In 1997, he joined the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Georgia.
