After Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and United Arab Emirates (UAE) closed their airspace, only one narrow route remains for Qatari carriers to transport passengers - via Iran.

Jordan on Tuesday announced that it chose to reduce diplomatic representation with Qatar and revoke the licence of the Doha-based Al Jazeera satellite channel, amid a crisis that saw four Arab countries sever ties with the Gulf state completely.

Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt, Yemen and Libya accuse Qatar of supporting terrorism by backing militant groups such as Islamic State and al-Qaeda, as well as the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood.

The fracas pits Qatar - a country smaller than CT and the world's biggest producer of liquefied natural gas - against Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt and Bahrain.

The crisis will have wide-ranging consequences, not just for Qatar and its citizens but across the Middle East and for Western interests.

Qataris will no longer be allowed to land at any airports in the United Arab Emirates or catch connecting flights there as part of increased efforts by Arab powers to isolate the Gulf state.

In the meantime, several airlines have suspended flights to Doha, a major global transportation hub.

Soccer's world governing body Federation Internationale de Football Association has said it remains in regular contact with Qatar, which will host the 2022 World Cup.

Egypt has accused Al-Jazeera of supporting the Muslim Brotherhood, which it blames for violence after Egypt's military ousted the movement from power in 2013.

Saudi Arabia said the move was necessary to protect the kingdom from what it described as terrorism and extremism.

The Qatari capital Doha has regularly been used by football teams from nations incapable of playing games on home soil due to adverse security situations or as a result of diplomatic rows with other countries in the region.

A Hamas official says Saudi Arabia's call to Qatar to cut ties with the Palestinian group is "regrettable" and contradicts traditional Arab support for the Palestinian cause.

Qatar Airways had to cancel all flights to neighboring countries.
