Attorney General Jeff Sessions agrees to appear before Senate intelligence committee

Parmenio Sano | 12 Giugno, 2017, 22:23

Attorney General Jeff Sessions is in for sharp questioning by senators Tuesday on the extent of his contacts with Russian officials during the presidential campaign and of his involvement in the firing of Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James Comey.

Sen. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, said he was troubled that Sessions wouldn't appear before the appropriations panel and that the apparent reason was "he does not want to discuss the scope of his recusal from the investigation regarding the 2016 presidential campaign as well as his significant interactions with Russian officials".

In a letter sent to both the Republican and Democratic leaders of the Senate Intelligence Committee, Sen. He did not indicate whether the committee would hear him in public or closed session.

Comey said President Trump told Sessions and other administration officials to leave the room before Trump asked him in February to drop a probe into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn's contacts with Russian Federation.

In explaining the cancellation, Sessions writes that he believed that members of the committees were planning on asking him about "issues related to the investigation into Russian interference with the 2016 election".

Mr Comey testified in public and then met with the committee in a closed session to discuss matters touching on classified information. Trump says on Twitter, "Totally illegal?" Preet Bharara told ABC's "This Week" that Trump was trying to "cultivate some kind of relationship" with him when he called him twice before the inauguration to "shoot the breeze".

Sessions said he was "pleased to accept" the invitation to appear before members of the Senate Select Committee on Tuesday. The deputy attorney general, Rod Rosenstein, will appear in place of Sessions at the budget review.

Former FBI Director James Comey hinted in his public hearing Thursday that Sessions, a former USA senator from Alabama, may have had additional contacts with Russians, and said in a closed hearing that investigators had received Russian intercepts detailing a possible third meeting between Sessions and Kislyak, sources familiar with the briefing told CNN on Thursday. On May 9, Trump fired Comey upon a recommendation by Sessions.

He said Trump reached out to him again after the inauguration but he refused to call back, shortly before he was sacked.

-Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer of NY said he would take Trump up on his offer to testify under oath about his conversations with Comey, inviting the president to testify before the Senate.

Sessions stepped aside in March after acknowledging that had met twice previous year with the Russian ambassador to the United States.

Reed spoke on "Fox News Sunday".

"This is going to prompt a lot of questions for him", the panel's top Democrat, Senator Patrick Leahy, told AFP of an appearance in which lawmakers will be eager to learn what role Sessions played in Comey's firing last month.

Despite Sessions' admitted talks with Kislyak, he has been dogged by questions about possible additional encounters with the ambassador, including at a foreign policy conference more than a year ago at a hotel in Washington.
