The outcome leaves May on Saturday battling to unite different factions in her party and reliant on the 10 seats of socially-conservative Northern Irish Democratic Unionist Party parliamentarians just nine days before the United Kingdom begins negotiating its departure from the EU.

Mrs May has given her close alley Damian Green one of the top roles in her new Cabinet.

The vote will determine who gets to negotiate Britain's departure from the European Union over the next two years, and the strength of mandate that the government will have in parliament for five years.

Theresa May's party lost the majority they had and are now reaching out to a socially conservative party called the Democratic Unionists to try to form a government. One of them is country, one of the others is LGBTI rights.

UK Prime Minister Theresa May was clinging to power by her political fingertips on Sunday after losing her parliamentary majority in last Thursday's election, as an agreement with the minority Democratic Unionist Party that would keep the Conservatives in power was still not finalized.

This would give the Tories the numbers to pass a Queen's Speech on June 19, which will set out their legislative agenda.

May spoke to the Irish Taoiseach (Prime Minister) Enda Kenny over the phone on Sunday.

Some in Theresa May's own party called for her to step down as leader after the results came in.

So who is really in charge?

"I think her position is, in the long term, untenable", Conservative lawmaker Anna Soubry told Sky News.

Dr Mokhefi-Ashton thinks her authority now is "virtually nil as most MPs will rightfully blame her for this electoral catastrophe".

The Labour leader also asserted his party's position of "absolutely remain [ing] members of the European Convention on Human Rights and the European Court of Human Rights". "May fights to remain PM", said the front page of the Daily Telegraph, while the Times of London said: "May stares into the abyss".

Chancellor Philip Hammond, meanwhile, is reported to have told the Prime Minister that she needed to put "jobs first" in negotiating a new deal with Brussels, in comments seen as a coded attack on her focus on controlling immigration.

An alliance, at what cost?

Alastair Campbell, the former Labour Party spin doctor who worked with former prime minister Tony Blair, hit out at the deal, saying May threatened the peace process in Northern Ireland by negotiating a "sordid, risky and distasteful" deal with the DUP.

"Ted Heath lost and tried to form another government and tried to get another majority in Parliament".

He said the Conservative election manifesto - which Hill and Timothy were key in drafting - was "a full assault on the core Tory voters, who are senior citizens". But we'll see. In this environment, it's nearly impossible to forecast what's going to happen in the next half hour, let alone in the next few months. With talks in Brussels just seven days away, it is clear that the plan for a hard Brexit, in which the United Kingdom severs all ties with the European Union, including free market membership, is now in doubt. "The details will be put forward for discussion and agreement at a Cabinet meeting on Monday". This certainly means a softer Brexit is now on the cards. This translated into 318 seats for the Conservatives (a net loss of 12)-and a loss of the party's overall majority of 330-compared to 261 seats for Labour (a net gain of 29).
