German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she was hopeful that Britain would stick to the Brexit plan following the snap general election that saw the ruling Conservative Party lose some of its parliamentary seats.

Speaking during a visit to Mexico, Mrs Merkel ended her brief period of "polite" restraint from commenting on Mrs May's catastrophic poll.

European Union leaders say that would risk undermining the whole single market.British proponents of soft Brexit say the European Union, especially big exporters to Britain, could be persuaded.

Two anti-Brexit activists pose with their hand-puppets depicting British Prime Minister and leader of the Conservative party Theresa May, left, and Britain's Labour party leader Jeremy Corbyn, during a protest, in front of the the Houses of Parliament on election day in London, Thursday, June 8, 2017.

In a note to clients, UBS wrote that the relative strength of hardline pro-Brexit groups in a weak Conservative government could make a breakdown in talks more likely and make it harder to reach a trade deal: "A tighter political balance could make it easier for Eurosceptics.to prevent the government from offering the compromises needed to secure a trade deal".

European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker also said he hoped there would be no further delay to the negotiations "we are desperately waiting for".

For years it seemed Britain could not get out of the European Union fast enough.

But her decision to call the general election seems to have backfired, according to the exit poll, leaving the country in even more uncertainty, something financial markets don't react well to. May then called a snap election hoping for a bigger majority to strengthen her hand in negotiations.

On June 23 it will be a full year since Britain voted to leave the EU.

Her ability to drive Brexit reforms through parliament is sharply diminished. But she was forced into an alliance with a small party in Northern Ireland, the Democratic Unionist Party, just to stay in power. Hogan said another British election might be needed to give a government a mandate to make the hard decisions required to secure a Brexit deal, as May was "very damaged" as a result of the poll.

But, without knowing for certain how May's cabinet will look when talks start, there is no guarantee that the United Kingdom will push for single market access.

The European Parliament's Brexit co-ordinator, Guy Verhofstadt, said: "Yet another own goal, after Cameron now May, will make already complex negotiations even more complicated".

"Her wish and will was not really too much accepted by the British people", he said.

Speaking to French Europe 1 radio, European Union commissioner Mr Moscovici said: 'Mrs May, who was supposed to emerge strengthened, lost her bet and is therefore in a less than clear situation because the truth is that we don't really know what the governing situation is this morning'. "We should clearly come to terms with the British to start as quickly as possible".
