Liverpool end interest in Van Dijk after Southampton row

Pammachio Corsino | 13 Giugno, 2017, 05:13

Southampton want to keep him and chairman Ralph Krueger said last month that the Saints would reject bids of up to £60m for their defensive kingpin.

However Southampton, who Van Dijk signed a five year contract with, are reluctant to sell and remain adamant that the player will be going nowhere at this point in time.

It's a huge boost for the Merseyside club, who had made Van Dijk their top summer target after their leaky defence nearly cost them a place in the top four of the Premier League and Champions League qualification.

There were two major reasons why Liverpool issued an apology to Southampton over their pursuit of Virgil van Dijk, according to a report on Thursday.

The Virgil van Dijk transfer saga has taken another twist, with the Dutchman's club now looking to officially report would-be suitors Liverpool over what has been considered an illegal approach for the defender.

Given that the 25-year-old Dutch worldwide only signed a new six-year contract at Southampton last year, having joined the South Coast club from Celtic in the summer of 2015, it was obvious that the Southampton see Van Dijk as a key part of his plans for the 2017/18 season.

Premier League champions Chelsea and Manchester City have been heavily linked with the player, but City's interest had cooled as they were not prepared to pay as high a fee as Liverpool.

The transfer row is the second this year involving Liverpool, who received a two-year ban on signing Academy players from other English clubs after accepting they made an illegal approach for a 12-year-old attached to Stoke City.

Officials from Liverpool and Southampton will come face-to-face at today's Premier League annual shareholders' meeting in Harrogate.

Southampton have become a favoured hunting ground for Liverpool in the past three years having signed five players ― including Adam Lallana and Senegalese star Sadio Mane ― for a total of nearly £100 million.
