USA calls on Arab states to ease Qatar blockade as crisis deepens

Russian Iranian foreign ministers call for Qatar talks USA calls on Arab states to ease Qatar blockade as crisis deepens

The Qatari government wrote to leaders in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates stating it is ready to respond to any military threat to its waters.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Qatar must do more, "more quickly" to combat extremism.

Their joint statement also listed 12 entities, among them Qatari-funded charities Qatar Charity and Eid Charity, as having terrorist links. Other U.S. officials have said Qatar has already taken some steps to reduce terror funding but that the steps are insufficient.

As we reported last night, speaking to Al Jazeera, analyst Giorgio Cafiero of Gulf State Analytics, a geopolitical risk consultancy based in Washington, DC, said: "I think the Kuwaitis as well as Omanis ... fear the prospects of these tensions escalating in ways which could undermine the interest of all six members of the GCC". The cruise line declined further comment, but is likely waiting to see how the dispute plays out before dropping Qatar as a port of call.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson speaks about Qatar at the State Department in Washington, Friday June 9, 2017.

Erdogan said Saudi Arabia, as the dominant Arab state in the Gulf region, should be leading efforts to unite the Arab "fraternity" there rather than dividing it.

"The blockade is hindering United States military actions in the region and the campaign against ISIS", Tillerson warned. Yes, we'll support these mediation efforts, along with the emir of Kuwait, Tillerson said. But he also urged Qatar to be "responsive to the concerns of its neighbors".

"Qatar has a history of supporting groups that have spanned the spectrum of political expression, from activism to violence, he said".

Erdogan said he had never witnessed Doha supporting terrorism, adding Turkey "will continue to give all kinds of support to Qatar".

Tillerson told reporters at the State Department that the crisis, which has cut transportation links and trade, had begun to hurt ordinary people in Qatar, impaired business dealings and harmed the US battle against the Islamic State militant group.

"It's clear to me based on these conversation that the elements of a solution are available", Tillerson said.

Lavrov said Iran and Russian Federation shared the same position on resolving the dispute between Qatar and states led by Saudi Arabia through dialogue.

Emirati officials said they perceived Trump's tweets as a sign Qatar shouldn't count on America taking its side despite US having some 10,000 troops based in the country's al-Udeid Air Base.

Though Trump again said countries must eliminate funding streams for terror groups, the White House said he focused on the need for the region's various USA allies to stick together.

Qatar has maintained its diplomatic clout in part by being the home of U.S. Central Command and the U.S's largest air base in the region and hosting branches of prestigious Western universities.

Donald Trump leveled fresh accusations at besieged Qatar during Friday's brief press conference.
