6 killed, dozens injured in massive London high-rise blaze

Pammachio Corsino | 15 Giugno, 2017, 04:19

Khan said questions needed to be answered about the fire advice given to residents: "One of the concerns that we have is it's a 24-storey building but for obvious reasons, with the scale of the fire, our experts weren't able to reach all the way to the top, so of course these are questions that need to be answered as soon as possible".

He repeated expert advice, stating: "London Fire Brigade advise that people who live in high rise properties or objective built flats and maisonettes, aside from having a working smoke alarm and taking fire safety precautions, should make sure that they know their escape plan and what to do if there is a fire inside your home or somewhere else in the building".

However, they were instead alerted to the fire by fellow residents, some of whom were believed to be Muslim people who were awake early in the morning due to Ramadan and were among the first to notice the blaze.

"Sadly I can confirm there are now 12 people that have died that we know of. Help! Help!' and putting their hands on the window and asking to help them", Amina Sharif, a witness, told Reuters.

"We could do nothing and we could see the stuff on the side was falling off, collapsing".

"We are in the Westfield just around the corner". Others said they could see people inside using flashlights and mobile phones to try to signal for help from higher floors. I saw one person jump.

"I could hear them screaming for their lives".

"I looked through the spy hole and I could see smoke everywhere and the neighbors are all there".

At least 78 people were injured, including 18 who remained in critical condition, the London Ambulance Service said.

Local residents said they had warned repeatedly over fire safety in the block.

"It's very, very challenging to put a number on those unaccounted for", Met Police Commander Stuart Cundy said after announcing the new number, The Guardian reported.

At a nearby community centre used to house some of those rescued, tensions were rising as occupants waited for news.

The fire brigade said the fire had spread throughout the entire building, now covered in plumes of smoke with visible pockets of fire within the charred structure.

"Any lessons learnt from this will be borne out not just across London, across the United Kingdom - and lessons learnt globally".

"The potential for a fire to break out in the communal area on the walkway does not bear thinking about as residents would be trapped in the building with no way out", it said.

She added: "In my ward, we have three tower blocks and all of them have had fires recently".

Built in 1974, Grenfell Tower was recently refurbished at a cost of £8.6 million, with work completed in May a year ago.

Eddie Daffarn, a 16th-floor resident, said he struggled to find the stairs as the building filled with black smoke until a fireman grabbed his leg and directed him to safety. However, an initial report claimed that there were a few lacking when it came to fire security and the residents have been complaining about it.

Other witnesses spoke of children, including a baby being thrown to safety, from windows high up. Prime Minister Theresa May said her thoughts were with all those affected.

A number of people have died after a huge fire in a 27-storey residential block in north Kensington.

The group said there was only one entry and exit to the tower during improvement works at the block in Latimer Road and it had issues with evacuation procedures.

I live less than half a mile from the scene, woken by the intense noise of police helicopters flying over the area.
