Police confirmed on Saturday that 58 people who were in the Grenfell Tower on the night of the fire are missing and presumed to be dead.

A total of 58 people are presumed dead after the devastating fire in a London tower block, police chief Stuart Cundy told reporters on Saturday.

The official death toll confirmed by authorities stands at 30, with around 70 people missing.

A woman touches a missing poster for 12-year-old Jessica Urbano on a tribute wall after laying flowers on the side of Latymer Community Church next to the fire-gutted Grenfell Tower in London, Friday, June 16, 2017, after a fire engulfed the 24-story building Wednesday morning.

The officer said that the current information is based only on the number of people they believed were present inside the tower when it caught fire during the wee hours of Wednesday.

Cundy added that the death toll could rise. The search for remains had been paused because of safety concerns but has resumed.

"The Brigade advised that a section of track be temporarily closed due to the short term risk of some debris from the tower falling onto the track", a London Fire Brigade spokeswoman said.

He said: "The investigation is a police investigation".

The Prime Minister, who has this week faced criticism over her response to victims affected by the tragedy, met with victims affected for two and a half hours on Saturday afternoon.

In a television interview Friday, she sidestepped questions over whether she had misread the public mood. "United in our sadness, we are equally determined, without fear or favour, to support all those rebuilding lives so horribly affected by injury and loss".

"What I'm now absolutely focused on is ensuring that we get that support on the ground", May said in a BBC Newsnight interview.

"The government is making money available, we are ensuring we are going to get to the bottom of what has happened, we will ensure that people are re-housed". This year, however, it is very hard to escape a very sombre national mood.

"I would like to ask anyone who was in Grenfell Tower that night, but for whatever reason has not told us they are safe to please call our Casualty Bureau", he said.

"Put to the test, the United Kingdom has been resolute in the face of adversity", Elizabeth said.

Meanwhile, Queen Elizabeth II struck a mournful tone in an address to mark her official birthday Saturday, remarking not only on the blaze at the high-rise building but also on the recent terrorist attacks in Manchester and London.

Protesters gathered around Kensington and Chelsea Town Hall on Friday as anger boiled over in London after claims that earlier renovation work may have been responsible for the dramatic spread of the blaze.

That is why I ordered a public inquiry, with the costs for providing victims with legal representation met by Government. "This was a awful tragedy that took place".

The meeting is unlikely to quell complaints that May has been slow to reach out to fire survivors, despite her announcement of a $6.4 million emergency fund to help the displaced families.

Some residents had warned months ago that the tower represented a unsafe fire risk.
