Cristiano Ronaldo denies tax fraud allegations

Pammachio Corsino | 18 Giugno, 2017, 04:44

In the latest case to feature one of the Spanish league's most high profile players being probed by tax authorities, Ronaldo has been accused of knowingly hiding his image rights income between 2011 and 2014.

This involved a "voluntary" failure to comply with his tax obligations in Spain, the statement from the office's economic crimes section said.

Ronaldo's agency had announced earlier that he pay his taxes constantly his taxes.

Ronaldo's agency, GestiFute, had previously maintained he was up to date on his taxes.

The prosecutor, which filed a lawsuit against the prolific goal-scorer, also accused the Portuguese star of falsely reporting income as if it were generated from real estate, thereby reducing his tax percentage, according to the Guardian.

Last month, tax officials said Ronaldo adjusted his tax declarations and paid an extra 6 million euros ($9.3 million) in 2014.

Between 2005 and 2010, foreign players in Spain were protected under the so-called "Beckham law" allowing them to curb their taxes.

Last year, Barcelona legend Lionel Messi and his father were found guilty of similar tax-fraud charges in Spain, each of them receiving 21-month prison sentences that were not served because the country suspends the sentences of first-time offenders if the sentence is for less than two years.

The denial arrives hours after a tax fraud lawsuit was filed against him in Madrid.

The prosecutor has alleged that Ronaldo defrauded the Spanish government to the tune of $1.57 million, $1.91 million, $3.59 million, and $9.53 million (all figures converted to United States dollars from Euros).

A year ago he won his fourth Ballon d'Or, placing him within one of the amount won by his rival, Lionel Messi of Argentina.

Spain's High Court in May cleared Brazil worldwide Neymar of fraud but he still faces a corruption trial in Spain in connection with the value of his 2013 transfer from Brazilian club Santos to Barcelona. He has denied wrongdoing.
