Doctors say student has severe injuries to brain

Parmenio Sano | 18 Giugno, 2017, 03:41

The University of Virginia student's parents were told he has been in a coma for about a year, and that he had contracted botulism, which causes paralysis.

If North Korea is to be believed, recently returned US prisoner Otto Warmbier is in a coma because of a mix of a sleeping pill and botulism, a bacterial infection that can lead to a coma if untreated.

Warmbier's doctors say they did not find any current signs of botulism in his system.

Warmbier was freed earlier this week after being jailed for more than 17 months.

Warmbier was arrested at North Korea's Pyongyang International Airport, while visiting the country as a tourist with Young Pioneer Tours.

The family feels "relief that Otto is now home in the arms of those who love him and anger that he was so brutally treated for so long", his father said. White calls him a "curious boy" and says his adventurous nature led him to travel extensively during summers.

He added that the family did not believe North Korea's story that their son had fallen into a coma after contracting botulism and being given a sleeping pill. USA doctors said they found no evidence of active botulism, a rare, serious illness caused by contaminated food or a dirty wound.

Until 2010, Warmbier's condition was generally referred to as a vegetative state, but many doctors saw the term as pejorative, since it suggested that a patient was somehow similar to a vegetable.

While the doctors indicated that they are unaware of the cause of Warmbier's present condition, they indicated that this pattern of brain injury is usually seen as a result of cardiopulmonary (respiratory) arrest, where the bloody supply to the brain is inadequate for a period of time, resulting in the death of brain tissue.

Instead, they're suggesting he suffered extensive brain damage - Warmbier has neither spoken nor demonstrated any purposeful movements since returning to the US.

"No one", Fred Warmbier said last month. "So we're looking to the future". Blue-and-white ribbons in the school's colors were tied around trees and utility poles all the way along the city's main road in a show of support.

"I'm able to wear the jacket that Otto wore when he confessed", the emotional father said.

He was found guilty of committing a "hostile act" against North Korea in March 2016 and sentenced to 15 years of hard labor.

"I don't know what being in shock is", he said, "but I'm pretty sure I was".

The other Americans held by Pyongyang are Kim Sang Duk and Kim Hak-song, academics who worked at the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology, and businessman named Kim Dong Chul.

North Korea said Thursday it released Warmbier over "humanitarian" reasons, its first official comment since he was returned to his home state of OH in a coma. North Korea claimed it had released him on "humanitarian grounds", without providing specifics of the situation.

"Otto is a fighter", he said.

At the request of the family, doctors would not publicly discuss Warmbier's prognosis or chances of recovery.
