Una leggenda che ha popolato i nostri sogni e i nostri desideri se ne è andata. Il successo, tuttavia, piomba inaspettatamente con un piccolo film sulle seconde occasioni, incentrato su un pugile dilettante che si guadagna da vivere facendo da recupero crediti per la piccola malavita locale: Rocky. A dare la ferale notizia è stato il figlio Anthony, che ha comunicato la scomparsa del padre a causa di un cancro al pancreas. A lui si devono pellicole di grande successo, quali Rocky o Karate Kid.


Nato ad Oak Park, nell'Illinois, Avildsen debutta alla regia nel 1970 con il dramma Joe. Prima del suo debutto ha collaborato con Arthur Penn e Otto Preminger. È Sylvester Stallone che porterà nel 1974 Rocky a un autentico trionfo mondiale coronato da tre Oscar (compreso quello per la regia) e che segnerà l'immaginario hollywoodiano di pari passo con il film quasi gemello Rambo.
