London fire: Tower victims 'may never be identified'

Parmenio Sano | 18 Giugno, 2017, 03:52

Fifty-eight people who were in London's Grenfell Tower are still missing and are presumed to be dead, United Kingdom police announced on Saturday, raising the death toll in an inferno earlier this week that turned the public housing block into a charred ruin.

Commander Stuart Cundy said 58 people who were in Grenfell Tower on the night of the blaze are missing and presumed dead.

The death toll in the massive fire that engulfed a 24-storey tower here almost doubled to 30 today amid fears that it could climb to "triple figures", even as Scotland Yard launched a criminal investigation into the cause of one of the worst fire tragedies in the country.

Cundy said there may have been people in the tower that police are not aware of, which would add to the death toll.

"The figure of 30 which I gave yesterday is the number that I know, sadly, have at least died".

The package includes a guarantee to rehouse people as close as practically possible to where they previously lived, either in the borough of Kensington and Chelsea or in neighbouring boroughs.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan wrote to May on Friday, saying residents felt increasingly enraged and frustrated by the slow response from the authorities.

"There is considerable damage within Grenfell Tower", he said.

He said: "I understand - I really do understand - the frustration of so many about not knowing the scale of the tragedy that is unfolding behind us".

On Saturday, May received more than a dozen victims at her ministerial residence - 10 Downing Street.

One of the victims was named as Mohammed Alhajali, a 23-year-old Syrian refugee, who came to Britain in 2014 with his brother.

The Guardian newspaper reported that contractors installed a cheaper, less flame-resistant type of panelling in the renovation that ended in May 2016. Firefighters took more than 24 hours to bring the blaze under control.

Six victims of the blaze have been provisionally identified.

There is simmering anger in the multi-ethnic Kensington area hit by the blaze, and public fury has been directed at senior government figures, including Prime Minister Theresa May, when they visited the stricken area.

"This will be about providing as best as we possibly can answers for those who have been so deeply and tragically affected by the fire at Grenfell Tower".

Grenfell Tower residents had expressed a series of concerns to the local council, including the lack of sprinklers and the fact that it had a single staircase - a common feature of 1970s tower blocks.

There are 16 bodies now in a London morgue, Cundy said, and the remaining victims are missing and presumed dead.

"That's one of the most awful things I have ever seen", William said of the tower's blackened shell.

Lord Porter, chairman of the Local Government Association, said: "Fire risk assessments and the construction of buildings are being reviewed and double checks are being made to ensure remedial work recommended under previous assessments have been carried out".
