Man arrested outside UK Parliament, police say

Parmenio Sano | 18 Giugno, 2017, 03:43

The man was detained at 11:10 am (1010 GMT) by the Palace of Westminster in central London, police said in a statement.

Mr Glaze said police wearing blue plastic gloves appeared to search the man and picked up items off the floor before putting them in plastic bags.

British armed police have detained a man on suspicion of having a knife near the country's Parliament in London. Khalid Masood killed six people including a police officer in a joint vehicle and knife attack. Armed police had guns trained on the suspect as he was restrained and bundled into a police van, witnesses at the scene told Reuters. Police officers used a taser to subdue the suspect and took him into custody.

The police said however that they "will remain open-minded whether terrorism was a motive".

The bearded man, wearing black pants and a grey sweatshirt, was seen being held against the fence with his arms behind his back by a police officer.

According to one witness, 19-year-old Bradley Allen of Barking, a man was standing outside the Parliament buildings with fists clenched and looking angry shortly before it happened and the man was soon arrested.

"He stared at me and my mate and we walked past him".

That attack was followed by a suicide bombing in Manchester and a similar deadly attack on London Bridge, thrusting security and policing to the fore of campaigning before last Thursday's election.

Parliament said it was aware of the incident.

"Within seconds he was on the ground. Police around him, telling everyone to move back".

A review of security at the perimeter of the parliamentary estate was ordered by Commons Speaker John Bercow following the incident. He was shot dead at the scene.

The use of armed officers and physical barriers has become more visible, while a permanent barrier has been erected to protect pedestrians on Westminster Bridge.
