Minnesota officer acquitted in shooting of Philando Castile

Parmenio Sano | 18 Giugno, 2017, 03:23

Yesterday, a jury found Minnesota police officer Jeronimo Yanez not guilty for shooting and killing 32-year-old Philando Castile last year.

Yanez testified that he stopped Castile in the St. Paul suburb of Falcon Heights because he thought he looked like one of two men who had robbed a nearby convenience store a few days earlier.

Officer Jeronimo Yanez shot and killed 32-year-old Philando Castile during a traffic stop while his girlfriend Diamond Reynolds and her child were both in the auto.

Yanez, 29, on Friday was found not guilty of second-degree manslaughter and two felony counts of intentional discharge of a unsafe weapon.

Yanez was charged with manslaughter and unsafe discharge of his firearm. The jury in the case spent approximately 30 hours over five days deliberating, and asked the judge to re-examine the Facebook video and the video from the police vehicle dashboard camera, along with Yanez's testimony on the stand.

The small city (Saint Anthony Village, Minnesota) that employed Yanez as a policeman dismissed him immediately after he was found not guilty of second-degree manslaughter. Supporters of Philando Castile hold signs as they march along an on-ramp for Interstate 94 in St. Paul, Minn., after leaving a vigil at the state Capitol on Friday, June 16, 2017.

By Friday evening, thousands of peaceful protesters had gathered in St. Paul and were marching through the streets.

Jurors broke their silence after St. Anthony police officer Jeronimo Yanez was accused in the fatal shooting of Philando Castile. CNN reports that 18 demonstrators were arrested following the I-94 takeover after a line of riot-geared police eventually met protesters and the crowd was told to leave. They were booked at Ramsey County Jail, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

After the shooting, then-US President Barack Obama described as tragedies the deaths of Castile and of 37-year-old Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, Louisiana - the second black man slain during an altercation with police in two days. The immediate aftermath of Castile's shooting was captured on video recorded by Reynolds and broadcast on Facebook Live.

Yanez testified Castile was pulling the gun out against his instructions and he feared for his life.

Prosecutor John Choi, who made the decision to charge Yanez, said although he was disappointed, the verdict "must be respected". They contended that Castile was not a threat.

For his family and many in the community, Castile is now one more African American face denied justice, joining the grim gallery of names like Michael Brown of Ferguson, Freddie Gray of Baltimore, and Tamir Rice of Cleveland.

Allysza Castile, Philando's 24-year-old sister, said after the verdict was announced that she hadn't spoken much in the last year because she gets emotional concerning her brother's death. “I will never have faith in the system.”.

Ms. Reynolds showed incredible bravery and composure during the incident, recording the aftermath of the shooting for the world to see, shining a light on the egregious injustice and in recounting the events in court, Hussein said. Reynolds said he was reaching for his wallet.

The discussions were scheduled to take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Hallie Q. Brown Community Center, noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul College, and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Wellstone Center. The school district said it was making counselors available for students and staff over the summer.

"Here on Earth, tell me what's a black life worth / A bottle of juice is no excuse, the truth hurts / And even when you take the shit / Move counties get a lawyer you can shake the shit / Ask Rodney [King], LaTasha [Harlins], and many more / It's been goin on for years, there's plenty more / When they ask me, when will the violence cease?"
