Palestinian groups deny IS claim of fatal stabbing of Israeli policewoman

Parmenio Sano | 18 Giugno, 2017, 03:44

An Israeli policewoman was stabbed and killed in an attack outside Jerusalem's Old City and security forces shot dead three suspected Palestinian assailants, police said.

The militant group Daesh took responsibility for the Friday attack on Israeli forces in Jerusalem, though both Palestinian factions and Israeli police have rejected this claim.

Israeli security officials did not respond immediately to requests for comment on what the SITE intelligence monitoring group described as the first time Islamic State had claimed responsibility for an attack in Israeli-controlled territory, nor on the attackers' affiliation.

But Israel's Shin Bet and Palestinian militant group Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip and has fought three wars with Israel since 2008, said the attackers were members of Palestinian groups.

On Friday, three assailants, armed with knives and a homemade automatic weapon, carried out two attacks at two locations simultaneously.

The officer, Hadas Malka, 23, was critically stabbed while attempting to reach for her gun, according to Israel's Police, and later succumbed to her wounds.

The attackers were known to the police, the Post reported, and were said to be involved in terrorist activities, Israel's security agency said.

An Israeli border policewoman and three Palestinians were killed in two simultaneous attacks last night.

The killing was "a natural response to the crimes of the occupier", he said, echoing the language used by Hamas after other recent attacks in Israel.

After terror attacks, pro-Israel groups may criticize wire services for misleading headlines that focus on Palestinian casualties.

A wave of unrest that broke out in October 2015 has claimed the lives of 272 Palestinians, 42 Israelis, two Americans, two Jordanians, an Eritrean, a Sudanese and a Briton.

All three men were from the village of Deir Abu Mashal, near the occupied West Bank city of Ramallah.

Netanyahu meanwhile demanded that the Palestinian Authority, as well as the rest of the world, condemn the attack.

The area around Damascus Gate was sealed off in the hours after the attack, with a few youths throwing fireworks at security forces.

Permits for Friday prayers for women of all ages and men aged 40 and over are to remain in place. A road leading to Damascus Gate full of stalls opened especially for Ramzan was closed off by police, and a shopkeeper said this would normally be one of the busiest nights of the year.

Four other people were injured in Friday's attacks, including another Israeli police officer and a Palestinian passer-by who had no involvement in the incident.

This is not the first time Israel lashes out at the BBC for what it says is a biased coverage of the conflict.
