The nice things Trump and others said about Rod Rosenstein

Rosenstein wrote the memo laying out the case for new leadership at the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

In [a] recent meeting with Brand, Rosenstein told her that if he were to recuse himself, she would have to step in and take over those responsibilities.

"The Department of Justice has a long-established policy to neither confirm nor deny such allegations". An official confirmed to Fox News that Trump was referring to Rosenstein in the statement.

Trump's young presidency has been battered by allegations-under investigation both by Congress and the FBI-that Russian Federation interfered to sway the 2016 election in his favor, in possible collusion with Trump's campaign team.

Reports that Trump allegedly asked two intelligence chiefs to publicly deny any cooperation between his campaign and Russian Federation are also said to be part of the investigation. Last month, Rosenstein sent a memo to Trump raising concerns over FBI Director James Comey - concerns the White House then cited as a central reason for Comey's firing. Rosenstein can fire Mueller, but that doesn't make him the one investigating Trump.

Earlier this week the Washington Post released a story reporting Mueller is investigating President Trump for obstruction of justice.

Rosenstein also appointed Robert Mueller to investigate ties between Trump's campaign and Russian Federation.

The White House has denied any collusion, and Trump has repeatedly complained about the probe, saying Democrats can not accept his election win. "Why is that Hillary Clintons family and Dems dealings with Russian Federation are not looked at, but my non-dealings are?", Trump tweeted just before 4 p.m. EDT.

Mr Pence's office confirmed he had retained Richard Cullen, a former Virginia Attorney-General and U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, to assist "in responding to inquiries" from Mr Mueller.

Mueller's investigation appeared to be reaching a broadening circle of current and former officials.

Rosenstein on Thursday night issued an unusual and puzzling public warning about stories attributed to anonymous sources.

Those who have agreed to be interviewed include: Dan Coats, director of national intelligence; Mike Rogers, chief of the National Security Agency; and Richard Ledgett, who recently left his post as deputy to Rogers.

At a congresional hearing last week, Comey confirmed that he told Trump three times that Trump was not being investigated as part of the Russia-collusion probe, and Trump tweeted "total and complete vindication" at that time.

Mr Comey said he was "sure" Mr Mueller was looking at whether Mr Trump had obstructed justice, but added that to his knowledge, the president had not tried to impede the Russian Federation inquiry. Rosenstein finds himself in a spot as he could face the President anger or answer questions about his own future role supervising Mueller when he could become a witness in the special counsel's probe.
