Theresa May sidesteps questions about response to Grenfell Tower disaster

Fifty-eight people who were in London's Grenfell Tower are still missing and are presumed to be dead, United Kingdom police announced on Saturday, raising the death toll in an inferno earlier this week that turned the public housing block into a charred ruin.

LONDON-Fifty-eight people who were in Grenfell Tower are still missing and are presumed to be dead, London police announced Saturday, raising the death toll in the horrific inferno that turned the public housing block into a charred hulk.

RBKC said 110 households had been given temporary accommodation by Friday morning, and added that it was working to find more permanent homes. Earlier the police figured the death toll at 30.

British Prime Minister Theresa May will meet with survivors of the London high-rise fire at her Downing Street office.

Ms May was rushed away from a meeting with residents on Friday under heavy police guard as protesters shouted "Shame on you" and hundreds stormed a local town hall calling for justice.

Meanwhile, fury has grown in the local community at what people say is a slow response from authorities and a failure to inform families and friends about the fate of loved ones.

May announced on Friday that her government has set up a £5 million ($8.4 million Cdn) "discretionary fund" to help pay for food, clothing, personal supplies and funerals.

The death toll from the fire that tore through a London high-rise has nearly doubled, as residents lash out at the government's response to one of the deadliest blazes in United Kingdom history.

A top former Conservative politician and Times of London columnist blasted May over her handling of the fire, and said that she must resign.

In a statement, the Prime Minister acknowledged the "huge frustrations" residents have experienced in trying to get answers from the council - and she vowed the public inquiry into the deadly blaze will be "open and transparent".

After a two-and-a-half hour meeting in Downing Street with victims, residents, community leaders and volunteers, Mrs May said she had heard their concerns.

A solemn Elizabeth and her husband Prince Philip held a minute of silence for the fire victims at the start of the procession Saturday.

London mayor Sadiq Khan has called for re-housing efforts to be "speeded up" and pressed Mrs May to make sure "the recovery operation receives all resources and expertise they need".

"It is hard to escape a very sombre national mood", Elizabeth said in a message on her official birthday.

"But if you know of individuals or families who you feel aren't getting help, then please let us know so we can get help to them as quickly as possible".

"It will go to establish the answers of what happened in the fire and how it spread, it will look at the building itself, it will look at the refurbishment as well".

"United in our sadness, we are equally determined, without fear or favour, to support all those rebuilding lives so horribly affected by injury and loss", she said.

The blaze tore through all floors of the building and took more than 200 firefighters 24 hours to bring it under control.

Mrs May, already under pressure after a botched snap election, is facing widespread criticism for her response to the blaze.

Twenty-four people are being treated in hospital, including 12 who are in critical care, he added.
