Trump acknowledges he is under investigation in Russian Federation probe

Parmenio Sano | 18 Giugno, 2017, 03:30

President Trump could have taken to social media Friday morning to celebrate the two-year anniversary of his presidential campaign announcement and unlikely political rise that followed.

"If the president thinks he can fire Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein and replace him with someone who will shut down the investigation, he's in for a rude awakening", Dianne Feinstein of California, the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said Friday in a statement.

On Friday morning, Trump appeared to confirm that he was being investigated for obstruction of justice in his firing of Comey, and seemed to take aim at Rosenstein.

It's been another big week in the investigation into Russian meddling in the USA elections. They have tried to highlight the positive reviews he received Wednesday when he made a statesman-like appearance in the White House to address the nation after Rep. Steve Scalise was shot during a congressional baseball practice.

And it was Rosenstein who appointed Robert Mueller as the special counsel to lead that investigation after Comey was sacked. "I can go around them". Rosenstein also appointed Robert Mueller to take over the Russian Federation investigation, which now would seem to include an obstruction of justice investigation.

Rosenstein didn't provide specific examples of what he might've been referring to.

Rod Rosenstein recommended to President Trump that he fire former FBI Chief James Comey, though also made a decision to bring in Robert Mueller, now the probe's special counsel. The DOD spokesperson did not immediately comment on what the downsides are to being transparent on strikes and the Pentagon said in March the rules of engagement have not changed, which applies to constraints on who and when the US can strike (more on that here). "That's undemocratic on its face and a blatant violation of the president's oath of office".

President Trump acknowledged publicly for the first time today that he was under investigation in the expanding inquiry into Russian influence in the election. Trump has expressed increasing dissatisfaction with the Justice Department since Mueller's appointment.

The tweets also are seen by some in the president's circle as the beginning of a case against the officials investigating him.

The White House confirmed that Mueller was among the candidates Trump interviewed to replace Comey. This makes some sense: One subject of Mueller's investigation concerns whether Trump's firing of James Comey constituted an obstruction of justice.

Confidants and advisers close to Mr Trump said his fury was mounting at the probe and he had been yelling at TV sets about its press coverage.

Mr Trump kept up his criticism of the investigations, writing on Twitter, "After 7 months of investigations & committee hearings about my 'collusion with the Russians, ' nobody has been able to show any proof".

In a series of statements on Twitter on Thursday, Mr Trump repeated his claim that the investigation is based on the "phony" premise of possible collusion between Russian Federation and Trump campaign associates. "Regulations way down, jobs and enthusiasm way up!"

I think the president should get on the work that is so important that he do and at this point let this investigation run its course.

He has decided - after consulting with a small circle of advisers in multiple meetings over the last few days - that "this is a political fight and he's going to fight it", the official said. "That combination of things I had never experienced before, but it led me to believe I gotta write it down and I gotta write it down in a detailed way". The legal one will come later.

"He's driving this", the White House official said, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss West Wing internal deliberations.

Until now, the White House has been essentially silent on whether Trump was actually a target of a federal investigation. But it's part of the President's mindset that he's under siege and he's going to fight like he always has.
