Trump knows he is "being investigated for firing the FBI Director"

Days after Comey was abruptly ousted, Rosenstein appointed Robert Mueller as special counsel to investigate Russian involvement in the 2016 presidential election and possible collusion with the Trump campaign.

A source-unnamed-told Fox News that Trump was referring to Rod Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general.

Mueller has hired 13 new lawyers to help him handle his investigation into whether Trump obstructed justice and if members of his presidential campaign colluded with Russian Federation to influence the outcome of the 2016 election.

The White House confirmed that Mueller was among the candidates Trump interviewed to replace Comey. Rosenstein also said that he saw no reason to relieve Mueller from his special counsel duties. Rosenstein then appointed Mueller, a former Federal Bureau of Investigation director, to investigate Trump.

Yet Trump's angry tweets on Friday underscored the near-impossible challenge his advisers and legal team have in trying to get him to avoid weighing in on an active probe.

Trump's digital volley appeared to be trained at Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who recommended the firing last month of James Comey - an nearly unprecedented move that could yet imperil Trump's presidency. Dianne Feinstein, the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, in a statement. "That's undemocratic on its face and a blatant violation of the president's oath of office".

At a congresional hearing last week, Comey confirmed that he told Trump three times that Trump was not being investigated as part of the Russia-collusion probe, and Trump tweeted "total and complete vindication" at that time. Comey has since testified that Trump had asked him repeatedly to publicly announce he was not under investigation. But on Friday, Trump said he is being investigation for firing Comey. The newspaper noted Mr Mueller had requested interviews with CIA director Dan Coats, National Security Agency chief Michael Rogers and Richard Ledgett, the former NSA deputy director.

Trump did not do anything to interfere with the investigation of Russia's interference in the election.

Trump has fueled the concern in Congress by repeatedly calling the congressional and executive investigations into his campaign's ties with Russian Federation a "witch hunt".

In an attempt to sound upbeat and to downplay the new developments in a controversy that has now reached the Oval Office, Trump also said that "despite the phony witch Hunt going on in America, the economic & jobs numbers are great".

"It's basically all he talks about on the phone", said one adviser.

"The bottom line is someone who claims to definitively know what this all means or where the news cycle will be in 24 hours also likely thinks "The Mummy" will win Best Picture at next years' Oscars", he added.

"He's driving this", the White House official said, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss West Wing internal deliberations.

The president has long vehemently denied any collusion with Moscow.
