Anger mounted in London yesterday over a devastating tower block blaze with unconfirmed reports indicating that 70 people had died and dozens still unaccounted for.
Faith leaders in London have called for the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire to be rehoused in decent housing rather than sent to "cheaper places far from London".
"Sadly I can confirm that the number of people that have died is now 17", London police commander Stuart Cundy told reporters.
Commander Stuart Cundy of the Metropolitan Police told a press conference the number may change but those believed to have died when the London tower block went up in flames is now in double figures. Although the police and fire service expect the number to rise significantly, they are following their usual procedure of only raising it as they confirm deaths.
British media and angry local residents have raised a series of issues including whether the cladding used on the building helped the blaze spread.London Mayor Sadiq Khan has written to Prime Minister Theresa May demanding answers on behalf of residents.
Ms May was criticised for avoiding locals when she visited the charred shell of the 24-storey tower on Thursday and faced cries of "Shame on you" and "coward" when she returned on Friday.
In a statement to mark the official celebration of her 91st birthday, she said: "It is hard to escape a very soreer national mood" after a "succession of terrific tragedies".
Residents of the destroyed tower said Mrs May was far too slow to visit the community, and that officials had failed to give enough information and support to those who have lost relatives and their homes.
Earlier, a sign at a Tube station said that the service suspension was because of the "safety" of nearby Grenfell Tower, suggesting structural concerns.

'My immediate priority as leader of the council is to make sure we can support those vulnerable people facing very, very hard times.
Cundy promised an "exhaustive investigation" into the tragedy and said "my heart goes out to those affected".
London has a chronic housing shortage even in the best of times, and those left homeless by the fire - already angry over what they see as government inequity and incompetence - fear being forced out of the British capital.
Public anger is mounting as residents and neighbors demand answers for how the blaze early Wednesday spread so quickly and trapped so numerous tower's 600-odd residents.
"People are wondering why it seemed to burn very quickly".
The head of state said a saddened country was showing a determination to rebuild lives wrecked by "terrible" tragedy.
Demonstrators from the Grenfell Tower area had gathered to protest the council's failure to act on warnings over fire safety in the building.
He said: 'The figure of 58 is based on what we have told about who was in there on the night'.
Other measures outlined by Prime Minister Theresa May following a meeting with residents at Downing Street on Saturday, included more staff covering phone lines and ground staff wearing high-visibility clothing so they could be easily found.

The ostensible goal was to foster a mutual connection between citizens of the two countries in a structured and regulated fashion. The policy changes won't take effect immediately, so Americans with plans to travel to Cuba in the near future won't be affected.
