Antonio Conte will stay as Chelsea manager, says club

Parmenio Sano | 19 Giugno, 2017, 05:05

Chelsea's board are also said to be unhappy with Conte's dealings with Diego Costa after he reportedly texted the forward to tell him he won't be in his plans next season.

Conte is yet to sign a contract extension beyond his current deal, which is due to expire in 2019, and said in May he wanted Chelsea to recognise his "real value".

His comments made it very clear that he really wants to return to his former club, in spite of the transfer ban remaining in effect, and making the situation all the more complicated.

For now, Conte will wait for the right signings to defend the title.

Whilst claims of a potential exit are probably premature, as they were repeatedly in Italy at Juventus, it's quite possible when Conte eventually leaves Chelsea that transfers will have a lot to do with it.

However, after a surprising turn of events, things have changed at the club as it is being reported that the Italian manager's relationship with the owner Roman Abramovich has degraded significantly.

He was named first-team head coach, rather than manager, outlining his priorities are on the training pitch, rather than in transfer negotiations. That offer could include sending Eden Hazard in the opposite direction.

Nonetheless, it is understood Conte has made technological director Michael Emenalo as well as supervisor Marina Granovskaia familiar with his transfer want list and also Chelsea will proceed employment efforts. Neither will be sold this summer.

Striker Diego Costa recently claimed Conte had sent him a text message that he was not part of his future plans and could leave this summer.

The manager is now on holiday, with discussions over a free transfer of Willy Caballero and contract extension for Thibaut Courtois continuing in his absence. He is expected to be joined in London by his wife Elisabetta and daughter Vittoria before the new season.
