British PM May tries to quell public anger after deadly London fire

Acilia Dean | 19 Giugno, 2017, 05:37

Sadiq Khan attended a local church service to remember those who lost their lives or remain missing after suggesting high-rise tower blocks dating from the 1960s and 1970s could be torn down in the wake of the deadly fire.

On Friday angry protesters chanting "We want justice" stormed their way into the Kensington and Chelsea town hall to try to confront the leaders of the local council.

The fire forced residents to flee through black smoke down the single stairwell, jump out of windows or even drop their children from the 120-apartment building.

At least 30 people were killed in the fire at Grenfell Tower in the west London neighborhood of north Kensington.

Police said on Sunday the number of people assumed to have died in the London tower block fire was likely to rise from its previous 58, adding they would provide an updated figure on Monday.

The Guardian and the BBC have reported in recent days that panels with a PE core were used in a refurbishment of the 24-storey tower bock that was completed a year ago.

"The figure of 58 are those who are missing and that we have to presume are dead", Cundy said at a news conference in London Saturday afternoon.

Of the 58, he said the number of confirmed fatalities in Wednesday's inferno remains at 30.

Scotland Yard have said the rescue operation by emergency services on the site will take weeks and the death toll is also expected to rise further, though not all victims may be identified due to the nature of the burns.

The Home Office said late Saturday night it will make arrangements for the family of Mohammad Alhajali to "travel to the U.K.in these terribly sad circumstances".

"It has been decided today that the public inquiry will report back to me personally", May said.

Cundy said police had now managed to get to the top of the tower and had undertaken a first visual search for victims, ahead of later painstaking searches.

British Prime Minister Theresa May admitted on Saturday that "the support on the ground for families who needed help or basic information in the initial hours after this appalling disaster was not good enough".

May said after the meeting there have been "huge frustrations" in the community as people tried to get information about the fire investigation.

Around 70 people are missing, according to Britain's Press Association, and identification of the victims is proving very hard. "This is an absolutely terrible fire that took place", May said. Many residents are still unaccounted for, and police said some remains may never be identified. They say they will also use visual elements like tattoos and scars, in the painstaking process.

The monarch stood for a minute's silence before her 91st birthday parade on Saturday.

"Put to the test, the United Kingdom has been resolute in the face of adversity", the queen wrote in her message.

Hundreds have been left homeless by the blaze, putting more pressure on officials in a city plagued by a chronic housing shortage.

Survivors of the building claimed the fatal fire resulted from a lack of maintenance to the tower.

Experts said the intensity of Wednesday's fire at the 24-story building will make naming victims extremely hard, drawing comparisons to the 2001 World Trade Center terror attacks in NY, where 40 percent of the victims were never identified. British officials have ordered a review of other buildings that have had similar renovations.

The tragedy has provoked a enormous response from nearby communities that have donated food and shelter to the victim.

The footage comes as it emerges survivors of the tragedy have been given just £10 a day to live off, despite more than £3 million in donations to relief funds.
