British PM Theresa May To Meet Fire Survivors In Downing Street Residence

Parmenio Sano | 19 Giugno, 2017, 03:54

Metropolitan Police Commander Stuart Cundy asserted that their investigation will "establish the facts and provide answers", as they "look into what criminal offences may have been committed". Firefighters took more than 24 hours to bring the blaze under control. The death toll is expected to rise with dozens still missing.

At least 58 people, who are missing following the recent fire disaster in residential Grenfell Tower block in west London, are presumed dead, British police said Saturday.

Local residents say there had been repeated warnings about the safety of the building, which recently underwent an £8.7 million ($11.1 million) exterior refurbishment, which included new external cladding and windows.

"The Prime Minister is this morning chairing a cross-Government meeting to ensure everything possible is being done to support those affected by the Grenfell tragedy".

"We are grateful to the Prime Minister for listening to us and for the assurances she has given us but now we need to see real action and immediate results with centralised coordination of the relief effort with residents closely involved".

If that death toll is confirmed, it would make the Grenfell Tower blaze the deadliest in London since the Second World War.

Fire engulfed the social housing block, where as many as 600 people lived in more than 120 apartments.

Downing Street has promised to do "what is required" to safeguard life - including evacuating the buildings, reports the Telegraph.

After meeting residents, victims and community leaders affected by the fire, she pledged 5 million pounds ($6.39 million) of support, housing guarantees and help with access to bank accounts and cash. "You have to be prepared to receive people's emotions, and not be so frightened about people", he said.

One of her closest allies, Damian Green, defended May's seemingly aloof response to the tragedy.

Tory MP Sarah Wollaston said she was "beyond disgusted" by the revelation.

"We were looking for her to say that she is here with the community", Simon McDonald, who grew up in the area, told the Guardian.

"I'm just hoping that they are in hospital, they've made it through the stairway, got out. The PM has sent her best wishes to HM Queen on the event of her birthday". Earlier in the day, the 91-year-old monarch described the country's mood as "somber" but insisted that Britain remained resolute during a hard time. "The country has witnessed a succession of awful tragedies".

"Put to the test, the United Kingdom has been resolute in the face of adversity", the queen wrote in her message.
