MORE: The public theatre of the Bill Cosby trialWhat is he charged with?
After all the emotional testimony, the bellowing attorneys and the reams of evidence, it was left to the 12 jurors who disappeared behind a courtroom door in this Philadelphia suburb late Monday to sort out those competing images of the 79-year-old comedian.
The fast-moving case went to the jury on Day 6 of the trial after closing arguments gave differing portrayals of what happened between Cosby and Constand. Numerous jurors were expressionless during testimony, but a few were smiling and chuckling when they entered the courtroom on Monday afternoon to receive final instructions from Steven T. O'Neill, the presiding Montgomery County judge. "With rhetorical dilemmas to resolve".
The prosecutor, Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele, drew from Cosby's own words in a 2005 deposition in a civil case filed by Constand as well as the testimony of Kelly Johnson, who alleged that Cosby had drugged and molested her in a similar way back in 1990.
"Who says something like that?"
This news organization does not typically identify people who say they are victims of sexual assault unless they grant permission, which Constand has done. On Monday, the question hanging over the case was whether the TV star himself would testify. Constand said on the witness stand she did not know Jackson.
The panel was excused at 9:40 pm, after a 13-hour day that included a six-minute defense case and almost five hours of closing arguments from both sides.
Constand testified last week that Cosby gave her three blue pills and then penetrated her with her fingers against her will as she lay paralyzed and half-conscious.
Bill Cosbydid not testify in his trial. "She is a victim who has come before you and bared something very personal and powerful for all to see".
From her prime seat, Cosby's wife heard her husband's lawyer blame his legal woes on the supposed lies, greed and vanity of his accusers.
In the prosecution's closing argument, Mr Steele said Cosby's lurid statements from 2005 helped corroborate Ms Constand's allegations.
Jurors were also keenly focused on what Cosby said about the pills he gave to Constand before their encounter, asking for the second time in deliberations to revisit a portion of the deposition in which the comedian talked about giving Constand "three friends for you to make you relax".
After the prosecution took five days to outline its side, the defense case consisted of just one witness - a detective - and six minutes of testimony Monday.
Cosby's spokesman, Wyatt, said Jackson's statement would "let the world know" that Constand had perjured herself.
Prosecutors suggest Cosby gave her something stronger. Cosby did not take the stand.
The judge at one point addressed Cosby to ask him a few standard questions. This is the only case to result in criminal charges against the comic.
"This ain't right!" bellowed McMonagle.
After just six minutes, USA comedian Bill Cosby's legal team in his high-profile sexual assault trial rested their case. Cosby then placed her on the couch and sexually assaulted her without her consent, she said. The implication is that she was after money from Cosby, one of America's wealthier stars. McMonagle said that while the comedian had been unfaithful to his wife, he didn't commit a crime.
McMonagle, a prominent Philadelphia defense attorney, accused Constand of telling "a stone-cold lie".
As he described reaching into Constand's trousers, Cosby testified, "I go into the area that is somewhere between permission and rejection".
"It's a relationship", he said, in a voice that sounded street-wise and tough.
A verdict in the case is expected quickly, with deliberations beginning on Monday following the prosecution's closing statements.
"We're not here for Andrea Constand". That is evidenced, he said, by how Cosby left Constand disheveled on a couch after the incident.
As they watched, Steele repeatedly asserted that, in a sense, Cosby had already confessed. Cosby did not admit to giving Quaaludes to anyone without their knowledge.
"You've sent word: You're exhausted", said Judge Steven O'Neill, dismissing the panel until Wednesday morning. "He says she doesn't say 'yes, '" Steele said.
Instead of a lover, Steele asserted that Cosby is a criminal.
Sixty women have accused Cosby of drugging them, sexually assaulting them, or both.
