A matador died after being gored by a bull in southwestern France on Saturday (June 17), the New York Post reported.

A SPANISH bullfighter died after he TRIPPED on his cloak and was then fatally gored in the side when he fell to the ground.

Ivan Fandino, 36, was performing a move to distract the specially-bred fighting bull when he stumbled in the ring during the fight, according to The Guardian. However, Fandino succumbed to his injuries before he was able to receive proper medical attention.

The Humane Society International said Fandino's death was a "tragedy".

Victor Barrio was killed after being gored by a bull last July, the first time since the early 1990s that a professional matador had died in the ring in Spain.

An award-winning Spanish matador has died after being gored in the lungs during a bullfight in the small French town of Mont de Marsan.

The royal family paid homage to "a great bullfighting figure" on their official Twitter page while Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy mourned the "sad news".

Fandino came from Orduna in Bizkaia. The matador made his debut in 2005.

Fandino had been invited to take part in the 18th elebration of the San Isidro Fair.

Fandino had been injured at least twice in previous events - once in 2015, when thrown into the air by a bull in Pamplona, Spain, but more seriously the year before when he was knocked unconscious in Bayonne, France.

In France alone it is estimated that 1,000 bulls are killed in fights every year.

'Bloodsports like this should be consigned to the history books, no-one should lose their life for entertainment, human or animal'.
