Far-right leader Marine Le Pen wins seat in French parliament: party

The far-right Front National, which now has two seats in parliament, was predicted to win up to eight seats, better than its first-round showing had indicated.

However, Macron's victory looks to have been marred by a record-low voter turnout, calling into question his government's legitimacy and his ability to implement reforms.

Just months ago, Macron was given little chance of becoming president, never mind controlling parliament, but he and the movement he founded 16 months ago have tapped into widespread desire for wholesale change.

France has a system in which funding for political parties is restricted if women do not make up at least 49 per cent of its parliamentary candidates, but most parties still put up more men for election. She won her northern constituency of Henin-Beaumont with a large majority and said would "fight with all necessary means the harmful projects of the government".

With 57% of votes counted, the Interior Ministry said that Mr Macron's Republic on the Move! party had won 41% of the vote, followed by the conservative Republicans with 23%.

But he may be getting more than he bargained for with the entry into parliament of loud voices from the ultra-left and far-right National Front leader Marine Le Pen, both promising to fight his plans to overhaul French labor laws, one of the touchiest subjects in France.

Turn-out was also thought to be down.

Republicans leader Francois Baroin declared his party the main opposition and wished Macron "good luck" because he said he wants France to succeed.

The party shed around 200 seats after five years in power under former president Francois Hollande, leaving them with only around 45-50 seats.

Voter turnout was projected to be a record low at about 42 percent.

Two polls show his La République en Marche, alongside its MoDem allies, winning between 355 and 360 of the 577-seat National Assembly.

"The rout of the Socialist Party is undeniable", said PS leader Jean-Christophe Cambadelis, who humiliatingly lost his seat in the first round and resigned his position on Sunday night. The Socialists, who held the presidency before Macron's independent presidential victory in May, were decimated and only won six percent of the vote.

At midday during the first round voting last Sunday, turnout was 19.2 percent.

In a televised speech, LREM president Catherine Barbaroux said "the magnitude of this new majority is an opportunity for France".

During last Sunday's first round of voting, LREM garnered 32.3 percent of the vote.

Rivals of President Emmanuel Macron's dominant new party are urging more voters to cast ballots this time in hopes of preventing him from having a crushing majority.

The conservative Republicans and its allies are set to form the largest opposition block with 97 to 133 seats.

Jean-Luc Melenchon, the movement's firebrand leader, won a seat in the southern city of Marseille on a pledge to lead resistance to Macron's radical labour market reforms.
