He said there was a feeling among people they have been treated badly and not understood by the council because some of them are "poor, some may come from deprived backgrounds, some may be asylum seekers and refugees".

Commander Stuart Cundy said "my heart goes out to those affected".

Scotland Yard have said the rescue operation by emergency services on the site will take weeks and the death toll is also expected to rise further, though not all victims may be identified due to the nature of the burns. Earlier the police figured the death toll at 30.

Cundy promised an exhausting investigation into the tragedy.

On the lack of sprinklers in Grenfell Tower, and other buildings, he said: "My understanding is that the best expert advice is that retrofitting sprinklers may not always be the best technical way of ensuring fire safety in a building".

"People raised these concerns, people were expressing issues regarding the safety and risky living conditions", says Lancaster West Residents Association chairwoman Olesea Matcovschi. A new sign was put up, removing that detail.

However, May retracted the pledge on Saturday night, said that the residents would be found homes in the same borough or neighboring ones.

Two nearby Underground subway lines were partially shut down Saturday in the fire area to make sure that debris from the tower did not land on the tracks. British press is reporting that as many as 70 people are still missing and unaccounted for in the tower. Police have established a security cordon around the building to protect public safety and allow searchers easy access to the wrecked building.

London's Metropolitan Police confirmed Friday they had launched a criminal investigation into the incident.

The tower's flammable cladding is widely believed to be the main reason for the rapid spread of the blaze.

Public anger is mounting as residents and neighbors demand answers for how the blaze early Wednesday spread so quickly and trapped so numerous tower's 600-odd residents.
