May earmarks relief money for London fire victims; death toll at 30

Parmenio Sano | 19 Giugno, 2017, 04:36

Protesters upset with how the British government has so far handled the aftermath continued calls Friday for greater assistance.

The displays of anger increased pressure on Theresa May over her response to the disaster.

Mrs May has promised a public inquiry into the catastrophe, and also pledged £5 million (Dh23.5m) of support, housing guarantees and help with access to bank accounts and cash.

The blaze, which consumed the entire 24-storey block of flats, is being looked into by investigators to determine what exactly caused it, and whether or not criminal misconduct contributed to the severity of it.

An Irishman was among those killed in the tragedy, a London-based lawyer claimed.

Metropolitan Police commander Stuart Cundy responded to fears that the number of dead could exceed 100 by saying: "I really hope it isn't".

"The scale of this tragedy is clearly proving too much for the local authority to cope with on their own", Mr Khan said in an open letter to Ms May.

When asked on Thursday about why she did not meet residents or visit a local community center, May said she wanted to visit the scene of the incident to be briefed by the emergency services.

The BBC estimates about 76 people are missing based on social media and missing posters, which could include some of the 30 confirmed dead.

The protesters barged their way through an automatic door and sought to gain entry to an upper floor. Police barred their way and scuffles broke out, a reporter said.

The protesters are seeking a list of demands which has been given to the council, Xinhua news agency reported.

The PM hailed the work of the emergency services but added: "Frankly, the support on the ground for families who needed help or basic information in the initial hours after this appalling disaster was not good enough".

It issued a statement before the protest to try to address the concerns of residents.

On Saturday, NHS England said 19 people were being treated in hospital, including 10 in critical care.

British authorities are launching a criminal investigation into the London apartment building fire - as the death toll from the blaze has almost doubled, to 30.

Many are demanding answers for how the blaze spread so quickly.

Local residents have accused police of hiding the true toll.

"We've worked tirelessly to establish how many people we believe were in Grenfell Tower on the night and at this point in time we are unable to say that they are safe or well", he said.

Some desperate residents pleaded to speak to the queen and her grandson about their plight and the fate of missing children as they left the site, with William promising he would return.
