Jones, who claims 9/11 was "an inside job" and the 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School included parents of 20 slain children who were "actors", said in a video posted Thursday to that he secretly recorded the interview because the edited version of it will be "a fraud" and "a lie".

In an internal memo obtained Friday by The Associated Press, NBC Connecticut staff members were told station executives made the decision after listening to concerns from employees, Sandy Hook families and viewers. Meanwhile, parents of children killed in the 2012 Sandy Hook school massacre have urged NBC not to give him airtime because he's theorized the shooting could be a hoax.

"Over the last few days, we have listened intently to Sandy Hook parents [and] considered the deep emotions from the wounds of that day that have yet to heal", the station's general manager and president Susan Tully said in the memo.

Megyn Kelly was replaced as the host of a gala fundraiser for Sandy Hook Promise on June 14th as a result of the interview.

In the audio clips Jones released, he splices in his own commentary reflecting on his conversations with Kelly.

Kelly defended her decision to interview Jones on Twitter Tuesday, saying that President Trump's praise for Jones had helped raise his profile and that it's important to interview influential figures.

Our families have already suffered the unbearable pain of having to deal with harassment from Sandy Hook deniers like Jones, on top of having lost our loved ones.

Kelly has called Jones' claims "revolting" but says there's value in exposing what he says to the American people.

On Saturday he leaked secret recordings of pre-interviews with Kelly through his Info Wars site. She claims she was moving forward with the interview to highlight Jones' falsehoods in the way "journalists are supposed to do".

The tape includes the NBC News host saying Jones "became very fascinating" to her while separately assuring him the interview won't be "some kind of gotcha piece".
