James T. Hodgkinson, 66, allegedly opened fire on a Congressional baseball team as Republicans were practicing for an annual game to be played at Nationals Park Thursday.

House Majority Whip Rep. Steve Scalise was the only congressman injured in the shooting.

Congressman Steve Scalise has improved in the last 24 hours, according to officials at the Medstar Washington Hospital where the Majority Whip is being treated.

The annual charity game, a staple in Washington, D.C., since 1909, pits GOP and Democratic lawmakers against each other in a baseball showdown.

Scalise, 51, sustained injuries to internal organs, broken bones and severe bleeding after being shot in his left hip on Wednesday morning on a baseball field in a Washington suburb.

Sava said Friday that there are hundreds of bullet fragments in Scalise's body. Hodgkinson died after being shot by police.

Scalise had been at "imminent risk of death" when he was first brought into the hospital on Wednesday, and he received many units of transfused blood, Sava said. "I think that his risk of death right now is substantially lower than when he came in. he was as critical as you can be when he came in".

Colleagues who visited Scalise at a Washington hospital sounded generally upbeat - but spoke more in terms of hopes than the confident predictions of the immediate aftermath a day earlier. He said doctors have turned down Scalise's sedation levels enough that he has been able to respond to visiting family members.

Hospital officials said it is hard to predict how long the congressman will be in the hospital, but that he is expected to be able to walk and hopefully run after a period of rehabilitation.

Sava said he told Scalise's family that "I am not declaring victory until he's playing ball in his back yard with his family".

"So we all owe Steve a big, big thank you", Trump added.

The FBI said that the shooter's weapons found at the scene - a 9mm handgun and 7.62mm caliber rifle - had been legally purchased.

Hodgkinson - an IL home inspector who had been living out of his van near the park - had a social media page filled with criticism of Republicans and the Trump administration. Republicans and Democrats sat in different parts of the park - fans could state their party preference when buying tickets. Rand Paul, R-Ky., said.

Two Capitol police officers, David Bailey and Crystal Griner, as well as House Republican aide Zack Barth were injured, but have been released from hospital. Griner remained hospitalized at MedStar Hospital after getting shot in the ankle, and Sava described her in good condition.

Bailey was spotted Friday in the Capitol, on crutches and out of uniform, accepting congratulations from fellow officers.

Dr. Jack Sava, trauma director at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, says several operations have controlled the bleeding and Scalise's vital signs have stabilized.
