One of the highlights of James Comey's Senate testimony last week occurred when the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director enthusiastically said, "Lordy, I hope there are tapes" when discussing President Trump's tweet-threat to release "tapes" of the private conversations between the two.

The Secret Service handled recording systems within the White House for past presidents, including presidents Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy.

The response comes after the Wall Street Journal reported on a May 15th Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request they submitted to the Secret Service.

Trump could also, meanwhile, turn over White House recordings of the president's conversations - if they exist.

Trump has been coy about whether any recordings exist of his private conversations with Comey, who was sacked by the president in May. Trump said to reporters on Friday: "I'm not hinting anything".

Much has gone down ever since then, including Comey's explosive testimony, in which he made several accusations against the President and said he hope there were tapes recording their conversations.

Mr. Flynn, who served as national security adviser, was sacked by the Trump White House for misleading the vice president concerning conversations he had with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.

"I think the president made it clear on Friday that he would get back as soon as possible on this", Spicer said. In this case, that means Trump could deliver his own sworn testimony, which the president has said he's prepared to do.

Leaders of the House intelligence committee have written to White House lawyers to ask whether there are any records or memos of Mr Comey's discussions with the President.

"We want to get back to running our great country", Trump said at a White House news conference on Friday after a week that saw Washington and much of the country fixated on the damaging testimony of his fired Federal Bureau of Investigation director.

Also Wednesday, Senate Judiciary Chairman Charles Grassley said his panel will investigate the removal of former FBI Director James Comey and "any alleged improper partisan interference in law enforcement investigations".

That tweet has prompted repeated demands from the congressional committees investigating any possible collusion between Trump's team and Russian Federation during the 2016 campaign, and the process by which he fired Comey, for him to hand over any tapes that exist.

Spicer said that he would have an announcement on the matter when he was ready.

"You'll be very disappointed in the answer", Mr. Trump said.
