Senate Passes New Russian Sanctions Bill That Would Curb Trump's Power

Parmenio Sano | 19 Giugno, 2017, 05:44

The US Senate voted overwhelmingly on Wednesday for new sanctions punishing Russian Federation for alleged meddling in the 2016 US election, and to force President Donald Trump to get Congress' approval before easing any existing sanctions.

A senior administration official said the White House is unhappy with measures in the Senate bill created to limit Trump's ability to ease the sanctions without congressional approval.

The Senate on Thursday voted 98-2 for new sanctions on Iran and Russian Federation, including new powers for Congress to block President Donald Trump from rolling back any penalties against Vladimir Putin's government.

The agreement has also established a process for the Congress to review any attempt by Presidnent Donald Trump to relax, suspend or terminate the sanctions.

It also aims to punish Russia's Vladimir Putin for interfering in last year's USA election, and to make it tougher for the White House to roll back sanctions.

During the hearing Wednesday, Secretary of State Rex W. Tillerson urged senators to oppose the measure so that Trump and his administration would have "the flexibility to turn the heat up" if necessary.

Senators voted overwhelmingly Wednesday to write stiff sanctions against Russian Federation into law and to give Congress a say should President Trump try to lift them, making a bipartisan strike against the government of President Vladimir Putin.

In a statement, Sanders said that he opposed the bill not because of the new Russian Federation sanctions, which he supports, but because of the additional sanctions against Iran that were also part of the bill.

The entire sanctions bill will likely pass the Senate by the end of the week; it's unclear whether or when the House would hear it. The libertarian-minded Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) was the only other "no" vote against the bill. "I'm really not in favor of new sanctions against Russian Federation now or new sanctions on Iran", Paul said. "I think this is harmful", Putin said, according to RIA.

The White House stressed that it is committed to the existing Russian sanctions regime that it believes is best suited to address United States concerns and would keep sanctions in place until Russia resolves the situation in Ukraine.

Earlier this month, Yahoo News reported that the Trump administration secretly tried to eliminate Russia's economic sanctions.

Lindsey Graham said the president will be "betraying democracy" if he doesn't sign the legislation, given the "overwhelming evidence that Russian Federation is trying to destroy democracy here and overseas".
