Suspected jihadists attack spa in Mali's capital, 2 dead

Parmenio Sano | 19 Giugno, 2017, 02:34

A luxury tourist resort popular with Westerners is under attack by gunmen near Mali's capital Bamako.

Security Ministry spokesman Baba Cisse said by telephone that two people had been killed, including a French-Gabonese citizen and another whose nationality was not yet known. It was not immediately clear what was burning, although jihadists in other attacks have set cars ablaze.

One of the extremists was wounded but managed to escape, according to the statement.

French President Emmanuel Macron was informed about the attack and was following the events carefully, according to an official in his office.

Security has gradually worsened across Mali since French forces pushed back allied Islamist and Tuareg rebel fighters in 2013 from swathes of the north they had occupied the previous year.

French military spokesman Col. Patrik Steiger said he had "strictly no information" about French military involvement in the incident in Bamako.

Mali authorities say suspected jihadists launched an attack Sunday on a hotel resort in Mali's capital, taking hostages at a spot popular with foreigners on the weekends. The number of casualties was unclear in the assault, which continued through the afternoon. "Ongoing attack at Hotel Kangaba "Le Campement" 30 min southeast of #Bamako, #Mali", the department tweeted, warning people to avoid the area.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to journalists.

Security minister Salif Traore said 20 hostages were freed after an operation by special forces, which have surrounded the resort.

The attack comes just days after the United States embassy in Mali issued a warning about a possible attack in the capital.
