A firefighter who battled an intense blaze devouring a 24-storey apartment building in London has been left wishing he did more. Grief over a high-rise tower blaze that killed dozens of p.

The remains of Grenfell Tower, a residential tower block in west London which was gutted by fire, are pictured against the London skyline on Friday.

Building officials have not commented since the fire.

On Friday angry protesters chanting "We want justice" stormed their way into the Kensington and Chelsea town hall to try to confront the leaders of the local council. The neighborhood's resident's association said the management company was negligent.

The Guardian newspaper reported that contractors installed a cheaper, less flame-resistant type of panelling in the renovation that ended in May 2016.

Previously, the Metropolitan Police had confirmed 30 people had been killed in the inferno; the announcement Saturday almost doubles that number.

"There are 58 people who we have been told were in Grenfell Tower on the night that are missing and therefore, sadly, I have to assume that they are dead", police commander Stuart Cundy told reporters at the scene.

She told BBC One's Sunday Politics: "We are still hearing stories of people not being allocated properly".

He said: "I absolutely understand the frustration of why figures haven't been released earlier".

Alongside both police and fire investigations into the blaze, she has promised to set up a public inquiry. Some have even referred to it as her Hurricane Katrina moment.

In his latest update on the recovery operation, Mr Cundy said a search of the burnt out building in north Kensington had resumed after a brief pause because of fears about the safety of the structure.

British Prime Minister Theresa May paid a visit Friday to a refuge center at St. Clements Church, where survivors and the loved ones of victims from this week's fire at Grenfell Tower have congregated. "We have been trodden on by people who say they are there to protect us", one woman said.

May announced on Friday that her government has set up a £5 million ($8.4 million Cdn) "discretionary fund" to help pay for food, clothing, personal supplies and funerals.

"There are people who tried to break into the officers upstairs", he said.

Around 70 people are missing, according to Britain's Press Association, and identification of the victims is proving very hard. Thirty-seven people remained in hospital, with 17 of them in critical care.
