Trump has denounced the investigation as a "witch hunt" being "led by some very bad and conflicted people", making accusations of bias against Mueller and his staff that have gained traction among the president's supporters. Last month, Rosenstein sent a memo to Trump raising concerns over FBI Director James Comey - concerns the White House then cited as a central reason for Comey's firing.
Comey said it should be special counsel Robert Mueller's task to determine whether Trump had obstructed justice, and therefore, had opened himself up to possible impeachment proceedings, keeping the allegations on Russian Federation in mind.
The latest media reports say the obstruction of justice investigation began just days after Mr Trump fired Mr Comey on 9 May.
The Twitter attacks came as Vice President Mike Pence hired a personal lawyer to represent him in the intensifying investigation.
Mark Corallo, a spokesman for Trump's legal team, denounced the Post report, saying on Wednesday: "The FBI leak of information regarding the president is outrageous, inexcusable and illegal".
President Trump on Friday continued to belittle the investigations of his White House, again using the term "witch hunt" to describe them.
In a major development in the Russian Federation investigation - news - that it is now expanding - to include questions about President Trump himself - and possible obstruction of justice.

Mueller is also looking at a second line of inquiry: whether, if any potential offenses were committed, Trump or others attempted to cover them up or obstruct the investigation into them, the source said.
Putin also echoed Trump's criticism of Comey, saying it was "very strange" for a former Federal Bureau of Investigation chief to leak details of his conversations with the USA president to the media through a friend.
Trump took to Twitter, his favourite tool of communication, to lament the "witch hunt" against him and accuse Hillary Clinton of destroying evidence tying her to Russian Federation.
Trump didn't immediately elaborate on the tweet, but it appears he is referring to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, whose memo on fired FBI Director James Comey last month was initially used as justification for the termination.
