We need worldwide co-operation on climate change, says Gove in Trump attack

Parmenio Sano | 19 Giugno, 2017, 04:16

Pruitt traveled to Italy alongside six top environment officials from the other G7 countries and participated in the opening session about climate action on Sunday before heading back to the United States for a cabinet meeting several hours later.

The summit was the first since President Donald Trump declared he would pull the US out of the global Paris accord earlier this month.

The U.S. said it would not sign up to a pledge by Italy, Canada, Japan, France, Britain and Germany which called the 2015 Paris agreement on climate change "irreversible" and key for the "security and prosperity of our planet".

The meeting of environment ministers from the G7 countries just concluded in Bologna, Italy, with a joint communique on a range of environmental issues, but with separate lengthy chapters on climate change and the role of multilateral development banks that were not endorsed by the United States.

"We the United States do not join those sections of the communiqué on climate and [multilateral development banks], reflecting our recent announcement to withdraw and immediately cease implementation of the Paris Agreement and associated financial commitments", the USA was quoted as saying in a footnote of the joint statement issued Monday by G7 environment ministers.

Trump said he wanted to negotiate a better deal for the U.S. But several world leaders said the deal is not open for renegotiation. Alongside Syria and Nicaragua, the U.S.is now the only nation not participating in the accord. During Secretary of Defense James Mattis' confirmation process, he stated that "climate change is impacting stability in areas of the world where our troops are operating today" and that it "is a challenge that requires a broader, whole-of-government response". Last week, Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland argued in a seminal speech to the House of Commons that Canada can no longer rely on the USA for global leadership.

He is continuing cooperation in a climate deal with the German government, the German environment minister in San Francisco instead of Washington. They eventually agreed, as long as it was clear the note came from "we the United States".

In a statement the EPA said Pruitt had emphasized it was time to move forward and find ways to engage with other countries to protect and use US natural resources.

Their tax dollars would also go toward giveaways to the United Nations' Green Climate Fund to help faraway countries reduce their carbon-dioxide emissions - all in pursuit of a goal that can't be achieved because countries such as China and India will continue to substantially grow their own emissions, offsetting any alleged progress made by the United States and European nations.

Pruitt made a habit in recent months of saying there is a US trend toward lower emissions from a peak in 2007, thanks to the glut of fracked natural gas pushing out coal as a source of electric power. However, the U.S. President announced the withdrawal four days later. In it, the administration formally rejected both the Paris climate deal itself and the concept of Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs), global bodies through which developed countries funnel money to poorer nations to help them cut their pollution.

"Every country but the United States expressed their absolutely unwavering commitment to the swift and effective implementation of the Paris agreement", she said in a conference call with reporters Monday.

Trudeau suggested striking out references to the Paris agreement in the communiqué, and seemed "concerned about further provoking his powerful neighbour to the south", the magazine reported.

McKenna said the Paris agreement could create economic opportunities worth "in the tens of trillions of dollars".
