"As we enter negotiations next week, we will do so in a spirit of cooperation, taking a pragmatic approach, trying to find a solution that works both for the United Kingdom and the European Union 27", he told reporters before a meeting of the 28 EU finance ministers in Luxembourg. Senior EU sources said the result would be a slow start to the already delayed negotiations.

With her strategy unclear and her position insecure, Prime Minister Theresa May plunges this week into tortuous divorce talks with the European Union that will shape Britain's prosperity and global influence for generations to come.

Writing for Brexit Central, John Longworth, formerly Director General of the British Chambers of Commerce and current Co-Chairman of Leave Means Leave said: "The EEA, EFTA, Single Market and Customs Union membership all subvert the ingredients of Brexit in varying combinations, by restricting economic freedoms, free trade arrangements (FTAs) around the world, the unilateral removal of external tariffs, deregulation, restriction of costly migrants, along with the requirements for financial contribution, all thereby undermining the fantastic opportunity Brexit presents".

Prime Minister Theresa May has repeatedly insisted the Government is prepared to walk away from the talks, claiming no deal is better than a bad deal.

"If we had a strong signal that she were backsliding I think she would be in major difficulty", the newspaper quoted one unidentified former minister as saying.

A spokesman for his Department for Exiting the European Union said Britain had been "crystal clear" about its approach.

Jean-Claude Juncker: The European Commission president will not be directly involved in talks and his spokesman has said he is unlikely to spend more than half an hour a week on Brexit.

The Sunday Times said ministers within May's cabinet had "let it be known" they would oust the prime minister if they thought she could not pass the government's legislative programme in a vote expected on June 28. However, it faces the prospect of delivering a Queen's speech while still thrashing out a deal with Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party.

The Conservatives now only have 317 seats in the 650-seat House of Commons and need the support of the DUP's 10 MPs for a razor-thin majority.

Compounding the pressures on the British leader, she has been widely accused of failing to show enough empathy with victims of a horrific tower block fire in London last week.

The government's current weakness has helped fuel criticism of its approach to Brexit, although pro-EU campaigners' hopes that it could rethink the decision to leave the European Union have come to nothing.

Business chiefs have backed First Minister Nicola Sturgeon's call for the devolved administrations in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to have a seat at the Brexit negotiating table.

"We have been crystal clear about our approach to these negotiations", said the spokesman.

The issue most likely to torpedo negotiations is Britain's bill for leaving the bloc.

The Westminster vote will take place before the European Parliament debates and votes on the deal, effectively giving MEPs the final say on whether it will go ahead.
