Bill Cosby sexual assault trial: Defence for star produces single witness before resting

Jurors in the 79-year-old's sexual assault trial will get the case late Monday afternoon, with closings now over and all evidence presented.
But Steele said it's no accident that some of Constand's memories are faulty.
As he hammered at Constand's credibility, McMonagle zeroed in on Constand's initial report to police that the incident may have occurred March 16, 2004, comparing it against her later statements that the alleged sexual assault occurred months earlier.
Cosby's testimony in her civil case shows just how hard a witness he would be to control.
"Ms Constand was untruthful time and time and time again", Mr McMonagle told the jury. Last week, police detectives read aloud his statements to police in 2005 and in his civil deposition in 2006 responding to the allegations.
Constand says Cosby drugged and molested her as she lay helpless on his couch at his nearby home.
A conviction could put Cosby in prison for the rest of his life. The jury began deliberating about 5:25 p.m. and asked the court one question around 7:15 p.m. and another at 9:30 p.m.
The jury in Bill Cosby's sexual assault trial will resume deliberations on Tuesday.
Cosby, of Cheltenham, is accused of drugging and sexually assaulting Constand inside his Elkins Park home in January 2004, when she was 31 and he was 66. Cosby did not take the stand.
Later, Valentino said in an interview that she was proud to be singled out because she had helped expose a man she called "the biggest serial rapist in American history".
McMonagle described his own client as a philandering husband, but an overly forthcoming one whose own statements about Constand have remained entirely consistent over 12 years - no matter how damaging they have been to his reputation. "I remind you, you worked a full day".
Cosby didn't testify at the six-day sex assault trial. By allowing Cosby's wife to enter the courtroom in the middle of proceedings while the judge was speaking, officials at the Montgomery Courthouse extended her an extraordinary and unprecedented courtesy.
"Don't let her declare victim", defence lawyer Brian McMonagle implored the 12-person jury, who have been sequestered throughout the trial. "What's she going to say tomorrow?" he said.
As expected, Cosby chose not to testify. In criminal trials, the onus is on prosecutors to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt, and defendants are not required to take the stand.
Bill Cosby's defence lawyer says the comedian and the primary accuser at his sex assault trial were lovers who had a consensual sexual encounter. McMonagle called the detective merely to attest to the existence of a police report about Constand's interviews with law enforcement investigators and to briefly discuss questions the policeman asked the alleged victim about several hours she spent with Cosby at a CT casino. However, Constand admitted under oath that she had been alone with him before, at his hotel room at the Foxwoods casino, and phone records showed that the two had made 72 calls to each other afterward. Never, was she incapacitated, he told the jurors, who were listening attentively. They complained that prosecutors were improperly striking blacks from the jury chosen in Pittsburgh.
As jurors watched Steele closely, Cosby faced forward away from the prosecutor and the jury. Constand testified last week that she made the calls because of her job at Temple, where Cosby was a trustee and a famous alumnus, and Steele noted the calls stopped as soon as she left the school. Cosby did not admit to giving Quaaludes to anyone without their knowledge.
Legal experts said testifying would have been a risky move that could have opened the TV star to withering cross-examination about some of the 60 or so other women who have accused him of drugging or molesting them.
Gianna Constand, the accuser's fiercely protective mother, testified that Cosby apologized over the phone to her and her daughter and offered to pay for her schooling. Hartwell filed a motion stating that Pulliam violated their custody agreement when she chose to appear in court with Cosby.
"She'd remember it for the next 365 days and all the days of her life if there were a sexual assault in this case", he said in his own summation, as Cosby's wife, Camille, sat in the courtroom for the first time since trial began.
Thomas, who was tied for the lead at the time at 9-under, made a decision to go for the green from a little over 300 yards out. The American Ryder Cup star then bagged a trio of birdies on the 14th, 15th and 16th holes to finish at eight under.
