Brexit negotiators from Britain and the European Union began formal talks on the U.K.'s exit from the bloc on Monday, however, billionaire financier George Soros predicted that if all goes well, both parties could look to cancel divorce proceedings before too long.

Brexit negotiations which could define the UK's political and economic future have begun, with David Davis calling for a "new deep and special partnership" between Britain and Brussels.

Speaking in Brussels on Monday, Britain's Brexit minister, David Davis, said he hoped the United Kingdom and Europe would be able to form a "new, deep and special partnership" as a result of formal negotiations.

The EU's chief negotiator, France's Michel Barnier, welcomed his counterpart David Davis with a handshake and smiles for the press in the European Commission's landmark headquarters in central Brussels flanked by the EU and British flags.

Officials on both sides play down expectations for what can be achieved in one day.

Once the divorce is agreed, the talks will focus on that future trade deal that May wants and which she says should feature financial services.

The Westminster vote will take place before the European Parliament debates and votes on the deal, effectively giving MEPs the final say on whether it will go ahead. Yet Davis entered the talks representing a government in disarray.

Finance minister Philip Hammond confirmed Sunday that it was still the plan to quit not only the EU but the customs union and single market as well.

With discontent in europhile Scotland and troubled Northern Ireland, which faces a new European Union border across the divided island, Brexit poses new threats to the integrity of the United Kingdom.

She told BBC One's Sunday Politics: "Where you have politicians right across the European Union and the United Kingdom who share the desire for a successful outcome, with low tariffs, zero non-tariff barriers, free trade between ourselves, co-operation on security and so on, it should be perfectly possible to meet the time frame".

May had promised to take Britain completely out of the bloc's common trading area and slash the number of people coming from the EU.

British Prime Minister Theresa May has said that the vote one year ago was partly a vote for Britain to control its borders, and has said that Britain will leave Europe's single market, as membership is incompatible with restricting immigration.

A spokesman for the Department for Exiting the European said: "We believe that the withdrawal process can not be concluded without the future relationship also being taken into account".

German federal elections could see Angela Merkel replaced as Chancellor by former European Parliament president and staunch federalist Martin Schulz, who once called for the creation of a "genuine European government".

Last June, British voters opted to leave the 28-nation bloc in a referendum.
