Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh, commander of the IRGC aerospace unit, hailed the missile raids, saying any more evil act against Iran will result in "costly consequences".

The Iranian missiles hit near a pair of cities in eastern Syria where officials said top ISIS leadership and its "bureaucracy" have fled to since leaving the terror group's so-called capital of Raqqa months ago.

Iran's Revolutionary Guard has launched several missiles at ISIL positions in Syria's Deir Az Zor province. It said many "terrorists" were killed and their weapons had been destroyed in the strike.

In a statement, the Revolutionary Guards said ISIS headquarters, command and control centers, and bomb-making factories were targeted by surface-to-surface rockets fired from sites in Kermanshah and Kurdistan provinces, northwest Iran.

Sharif said on Monday, however, that the missiles were not only aimed at sending a message to IS, but also to Riyadh and Washington.

The Revolutionary Guards said, according to the New York Times, the missile launches "targeted the headquarters and meeting place and suicide auto assembly line of ISIS terrorists" in the province of Deir al-Zour, where Islamic State group forces surround an estimated 200,000 people in a government-held section of the provincial capital of the same name.

"They can not slap us". Isis had claimed responsibility for the recent attacks that were carried out by suicide vehicle bombers, Tasnim news agency reported.

Australia is part of a USA -led coalition that has been waging war against Islamic State militants in Syria and Iraq.

The spokesman of Iran's Revolutionary Guard, Gen. Ramazan Sharif, left, speaks with The Associated Press reporters at the conclusion of his press conference in Tehran, Iran, Tuesday, June 20, 2017.

Iran's use of its missile arsenal for first time since 80s as the U.S. has increased its pressure on Iran to limit the country's missile program.

Iran said the attack was a warning to terrorists and their backers not to attempt further such attacks on Iran.

Iranian television showed footage of the missiles being launched into the night sky.

"The missiles were launched in coordination with Syria", the IRGC official said.

For the first time in its involvement in Syria's six years of civil war, Iran has launched missiles against Islamic State (IS) targets in Syria.

The Russians, who have been providing air cover for Assad's forces since 2015, appear to want to avoid further US targeting of Syrian warplanes or ground troops that have come under USA attack in eastern Syria recently.
