Northern Ireland politics hits PM May's coalition talks

Sveva Terracina | 20 Giugno, 2017, 00:11

Arlene Foster's leadership of the Democratic Unionists remains a stumbling block that could scupper crunch talks to end a powersharing stalemate in Northern Ireland, Sinn Fein has warned.

He said that in the talks the DUP was seeking to "achieve a more compassionate style of government for the whole of the UK".

UUP Leader Robin Swann said: "An agreement may be reached with the DUP but what will Sinn Fein seek in return?"

GERRY Adams has said he told Theresa May that she is in breach of the Good Friday Agreement in their first face-to-face meeting since the election.

Conservative Party sources say May wants to show her government is up and running but her loss of authority in last week's election will make it harder to handle a hectic agenda - Brexit talks with the European Union, tackling a slowing economy, a political crisis in Ireland, and a devastating fire in London.

On Friday, Ms Foster signalled her optimism that a deal to restore powersharing by a June 29 deadline could be done, adding that it "takes two to tango and we're ready to dance".

"We've also raised concerns around any side deal or understanding with the DUP that could undermine the agreements and make the job of re-establishing the institutions even more hard".

"Any deal that undermines the Good Friday Agreement will be opposed by Sinn Féin and we would hope the Irish Government".

"The consensus expectation was for an nearly unanimous decision to keep rates unchanged, however in an unexpected development we got a significant split open up amongst policymakers about whether to hold or whether to hike rates".

Adams met Theresa May along with other senior Sinn Féin figures including Michelle O'Neill. "That means we have to finish out and implement things that have already been agreed".

"We spoke about the very important need for both governments to be impartial actors when it comes to Northern Ireland and that we are co-guarantors of the Good Friday Agreement and that any agreement that may exist between the Conservatives and the DUP should not in any way impact on the Good Friday Agreement", he said. We will wait and see.

"I want to renew the close bond and strong relations that exist between Ireland and the United Kingdom".

"We were assured by the Prime Minister that she wasn't looking a "hard" Brexit or a "soft" Brexit, but rather the "right" Brexit".

"We continue our discussions with the DUP".
