Palestinian attackers killed after killing Israeli officer

Parmenio Sano | 20 Giugno, 2017, 03:26

Palestinian groups have rejected ISIL's claim of responsibility for Friday's attacks in Jerusalem, which left one Israeli police officer killed and resulted in Israeli soldiers killing three Palestinians.

Three suspected Palestinian attackers were shot dead by security forces, Israeli police said Friday.

The IS group claimed the attack earlier today in an online statement, saying that three IS militants had targeted "a gathering of Jews" in an operation on Friday. Israeli security officials were baffled about how to prevent the knife attacks because, unlike suicide bomber vests, a knife can easily and openly be carried from place to place and wielded at a moment's notice.

Israel had previously announced its annual goodwill measures for Ramadan that included 200,000 thousand visiting permits for family visits for Palestinians from the West Bank and access for 100 Gaza residents to attend prayers at Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Two of the Palestinians attacked police officers with guns and knives while the third stabbed the policewoman, police say.

Two Palestinians opened fire at and tried to stab a group of Israeli police officers, and simultaneously another Palestinian stabbed to death a border policewoman.

On Saturday, Israeli police rounded up over 350 Palestinians in Jerusalem in a mass crackdown on undocumented workers, a police spokesman said.

Jerusalem is a crucial holy site for both Jews and Muslims, and has been a point of contention in the Israel-Palestinian peace process for decades. The president vowed Israel "will prosecute all those who aid terrorists, wherever they may be".

Numerous stabbing attacks have targeted border police deployed at the Old City's Damascus Gate. Both the incidents took place nearly simultaneously. A shopkeeper said this would normally be one of the busiest nights of the year.

All three perpetrators were later shot down by Israeli soldiers.

In their village of Deir Abu Mashal, near Ramallah, relatives of the three denied any connection to the Islamic State or the other groups.

He also said the attack proved the Palestinian Authority's policy of security coordination with Israel was wrong, calling it "a national crime". Four other people were wounded, including a police officer, two Arabs and a woman treated for shock. It also mentioned that the two young Palestinians had been jailed in Israeli prisons before.

Since October 2015, more than 285 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces during - or immediately after - alleged attacks on Israelis or in clashes with Israeli security forces, according to Palestinian figures.
