Officers fired their weapons at Charlenna Lyles (above) in front of her children after seeing the 30-year-old holding a knife in the apartment of a low-income housing complex in Magnuson Park.

The dead woman was identified as 30-year-old Charleena Lyles by family members - who said she had four children and was expecting a fifth.

Family members said Lyles had experienced mental health problems in the previous year and that she was several months pregnant, which BuzzFeed News couldn't immediately confirm.

Police Sgt. Mark Jamieson said two officers went to Lyles' address after she called to report a burglary. The Seattle Times reports that the woman was concerned that local authorities would take away her four children.

- Police said Lyles was armed with one or more kitchen knives, but they have not said whether she directly threatened the officers. Toward the end, the officers could be heard yelling "get back" and "we need help" and then gunfire erupted.

Police chief Kathleen O'Toole said The Seattle police department's Force Investigation Team and Office of Professional Accountability will be reviewing the shooting. It was unclear what relationship the children had with Lyles, but police say they were being cared for by other family members.

A dramatic dash-cam audio recording captures the moment Seattle police opened fire on a knife-wielding woman who relatives said was pregnant and suffered from mental-health issues. Lyles' family says the officers' actions were motivated by racism. Lyles' relatives also told outlets they believed that her race had been a factor in the officer's decision to shoot.

In the past, the family said officials were able to arrest Lyles without using deadly force.

Audio taken from the officer's dashcam was released by police on Monday morning. Rather than knowing how to de-escalate a tense situation, these police officers shot first, prepared to ask questions later.

The Seattle Police Department has been under scrutiny by the US Justice Department following a report five years ago that found officers too often used excessive force.

What was the relationship between Lyles and police that made them think they needed two cops?

The audio, which was redacted in some places, also included officers discussing a previous visit to Lyles' apartment June 5, when police responded to a domestic disturbance call.

The officers who shot her are on paid leave, as is in standard procedure. Police were reportedly responding to call placed by Lyles about attempted burglary.

"This will be fully investigated", he continued. A federal court-appointed monitor recently said the SPD had been making significant improvements to its policing practices. Williams has launched a GoFundMe page in Lyles' name.
