Southwest celebrates first day of summer with heat wave

Parmenio Sano | 20 Giugno, 2017, 18:31

At higher temperatures, air has a lower density - it is thinner.

Excessive heat warnings have been issued for inland California, southern Nevada and parts of southwest Arizona until Friday. Temperatures are expected to climb to 120-degrees in the metro area in the next week.

"Very hot temperatures will significantly increase the potential for heat-related illness", the weather service said.

An American Airlines statement provided to The Arizona Republic newspaper said those jets should be fine up to 126-127F (53C) - just a little higher than what is expected.

That is higher than the operating temperature of some planes.

Due to thunderstorms in the north east of the United States, a number of flights have been delayed or cancelled.

Palm Springs has soared above 120 several times, most recently hitting 122 on June 29, 2013.

American Airlines is waiving fees for customers who want to change their travel plans. Tuesday's high was expected to hit 115. And with the health dangers of heat and dehydration, that's where authorities hope they keep coming back. A punishing heat wave has arrived in the Southwestern U.S. and brought temperatures that will approach 120 degrees in Arizona. The buildup of warmth creates a large-scale trough of low pressure that extends from Mexico to Arizona, Southern California and Nevada.

Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski said light winds, intense sunshine and extreme temperatures can be a unsafe combination.

The warning also applies to pets.

Visitors to Sin City also should be aware that the Strip is often hotter than the rest of the gambling paradise.

The Tucson airport has no record of heat-related flight cancellations and has heard nothing regarding any possible cancellations of Tucson flights during the current heat wave, TIA spokesman David Hatfield said, noting that individual airlines make those decisions.

Wunderground Weather Historian Christopher C. Burt said Phoenix temperatures rose to 120 degrees and above only three times in recorded history-twice in 1990 and once in 1995. Urban heat means that asphalt and buildings in metro areas contain more heat than non-developed areas.

Wednesday looks to challenge that fresh record with a forecast temperature of 109 degrees. Drinking extra water and sports drinks will help prevent dehydration that can trigger a health crisis like a heat stroke. "The theme over the next week will be the intense and unsafe heat wave that will impact the entire region", the NWS's Phoenix office said on Sunday in a forecast discussion.

- In Phoenix, the 118 degrees on Monday tied the record set exactly a year ago. They're asked to call the reservations line at 800-433-7300.
