Trump proposes privatising air traffic control

Sveva Terracina | 20 Giugno, 2017, 01:15

Trump announced plans Monday to overhaul the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which regulates all civil aviation, by turning air traffic control into a non-profit that he claims would help modernize the system and cut costs.

Trump said we live in a modern age yet our air traffic control system is stuck, painfully, in the past.

The more remarkable feat is how many in the industry agree on the basics: The airline trade group supports a spinoff, and a year ago so did the air-traffic controller's union, which said it will evaluate the specifics of any bill.

Modernizing and or privatizing the air traffic control system is something The Heritage Foundation has long supported. "After billions and billions of tax dollars spent and many years of delays, we are still stuck with an ancient, broken, antiquated terrible system that doesn't work", Trump said.

The plan has drawn appraises from former transportation secretaries, who lauded the move as the "right solution for the 21st century".

Privatizing the air traffic control system in the United States is not a new idea; it has been tried before, however, the Senate quashed the plan. He failed to mention, however, that Canada employs nine times fewer air traffic controllers than the U.S. FAA.

President Donald Trump believes in the power of business.

A similar FAA proposal two years ago died on the House floor, but Shuster said he believes Trump's election proves taxpayers want outside-the-box thinking, and Democrats would see value in a broader infrastructure package that might link some of the cities they represent. But even though the Federal Aviation Administration has defended that effort, the years-long move has been plagued by delays, funding woes and other setbacks.

But his plan - short on specifics - is to urge Congress to create a private, nonprofit corporation to hire, manage and fire controllers. "In fact, nations that have privatized ATC have seen operational costs increase at a much higher rate than has been seen in the USA under the FAA". "It's time to join the future and make flights quicker, safer, more reliable".

Steinberg admits that while the current ATC system is older and not always ideal, it keeps air travelers safe through some of the world's most complex air corridors in the U.S. But critics say the radar and radio tech it uses to do that is outdated. This new plan would do nothing to solve any current technology or efficiency issues, while undermining the world's most extensive general aviation system and disrupting the world's largest and safest air traffic control system.

In fact, Trump went down the line of problems with previous attempts at privatizing the system-keeping existing controllers in the system, working with private pilots, keeping small airports possible-and promised that his new system would solve every one of these problems.

Paul Hudson, group president and longtime member of the FAA Aviation Rulemaking Advisory Committee, stated, "Adopting this scheme would mean handing the airlines (for free) control over a core public asset, and providing them almost unbridled power to extract new fees and increased taxes from passengers".
