Republican congressional candidate Karen Handel on Tuesday ripped Democratic opponent Jon Ossoff for the flood of outside donations that have pumped up his war chest and helped make Tuesday's Georgia special election the most expensive House race in US history.

Ossoff, a 30-year-old former congressional aide, is locked in a tight race with Republican Karen Handel to represent the suburban Atlanta district.

With Democrats potentially striking the first blow against Trump in 2017, the race has drawn substantial attention on the national stage - and vast contributions from across the country to both candidates. Ossoff hopes to maximize the district's Democratic base and pick up just enough independents and moderate Republicans who don't align with Trump.

Handel has also had to strike a hard balance when it comes to the president.

Ms Handel came a distant second to Mr Ossoff in the April election, but the Republican vote had been split among 11 candidates.

"It's kind of a referendum", he said over a platter of pulled pork.

"I really like Trump and I feel good about what he's doing", Asper told CNN.

Handel maintained some distance from Trump in the primary but has fully embraced his support and agenda since, including a joint fundraiser.

While no new polls have been released this week, the most recent WSB-TV/Landmark poll showed Ossoff with 49.7% vs. Handel with 48%, well within the poll's 3.5% margin of error.

"Just like any sporting event, however unlikely it is that you're close heading into the fourth quarter, a loss is bitterly disappointing and there will be some feeling of, "when do we get this done if it's not this race?'" Democratic strategist Dan Kanninen told Politico". As for the threatening letter she received, Handel said it made her "more determined than ever".

She concluded: "I think it's going to go well for me and for Republicans".

Principled PAC bills itself as a group that only supports "principled conservatives who have the backbone to stand up to the Washington elite", but is a bit player in the political world and has faced staunch criticism from conservative leaders.

The outcome of Georgia's contest is likely to become a prism through which congressional Republicans view Trump - a reality with major policy and political implications.

A win for her means a vote of confidence for Trump. "Voting rights are constitutional rights", Ossoff said after the decision. I used to live in D.C. and I know what it's like to have zero representation in Congress. What they tend to have in common: Relatively highly educated, wealthy and diverse populations, plus people who - like thousands in Ossoff's district - voted for Mitt Romney in 2012 and then backed Hillary Clinton in 2016.

Issue One estimates that almost half of the money dumped into the race has been controlled by outsider groups, such as the political action committee behind an attack ad tying Ossoff and Democrats to the Alexandria shooting that left a Republican congressman in critical condition.

- a 150 percent increase from April's vote - the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. Handel has now personally called for the ad to be taken down, calling it "disgusting".

Other issues, she said, were "veterans issues, transportation infrastructure, the fight against terrorism, [the] budget, and the economy - kitchen-table issues".

Republican Karen Handel is a former Georgia Secretary of State. Ossoff calls the shooting a "national tragedy" that should not be politicized.

"We all need to be focused on bringing more civility and unity to our political conversation, even though we have intense differences of opinion", he said.
