Police said the attacker who drove the van has been arrested on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of terrorism, including murder and attempted murder.

Police said that one man had been arrested at the scene and that no further suspects had been identified.

In a statement issued around six hours after the incident, the Finsbury Park Mosque condemned the "heinous terrorist attack" and said: "We are extremely unhappy with the mainstream media not reporting this as a terrorist attack, whereas they are very swift in describing attacks involving individuals professing to be Muslims and acting in the name of Islam".

Police forensic officers walk down a road close to where a vehicle collided with pedestrians in the Finsbury Park. But it was also the work of Muslim community leaders, in partnership with the London Metropolitan Police Service's Muslim Contact Unit and local member of Parliament Jeremy Corbyn.

According to witnesses, upon exiting the vehicle, Osborne allegedly was yelled "I'm going to kill all Muslims - I did my bit" and smiled, waved and blew kisses at the public.

Another witness, a 25-year-old who was on crutches after sustaining injuries in the attack, gave a similar account to BuzzFeed News, saying he had heard the man say: "It's for London Bridge, I done my duty, what I came here for".

(Vatican Radio) English Cardinal Vincent Nichols joined religious and political leaders on Monday in condemning an attack on Muslims leaving the Finsbury Park mosque in north London.

Video filmed immediately after the attack showed a Caucasian man being detained by police. But imam Mohammed Mahmoud stepped up and told the angry crowd to stop and to restrain the suspect until police arrived instead. Many police cars and ambulances were responding.

The Muslim Council of Britain tweeted, "We have been informed that a van has run over worshipers as they left #FinsburyPark Mosque".

One pedestrian said he had jumped out the way of the van.

May added that "there has been far too much tolerance of extremism over many years".

British security officials, speaking on condition of anonymity in line with official policy, said hate crimes directed at Muslims have increased almost five-fold in the wake of several attacks in Britain.

J.K. Rowling is no stranger to speaking up on Twitter, and she did so again on Monday morning. "It wasn't me alone, there was a group of brothers.who were calm and collected enough to calm people down and extinguish any flames of anger that would have taken charge".

Local youths told by Middle East Eye they were forced to restrain the alleged attacker themselves for between 10 and 20 minutes.

London's police commander says the van attack near Finsbury Park Mosque was clearly an attack on Muslims.

"Al-Azhar affirms its total rejection of this terrorist, racist, sinful act, calling on Western countries to take all precautionary measures to limit the phenomenon of Islamophobia", it said in a statement. Police believe the rampage is inspired by Muslim extremist ideology.

Last month, a suicide bomber blew himself up outside a pop concert in Britain's third city of Manchester, killing 22 people, many of them children.
