White House Confirms Trump's Speech on Cuba in Miami on Friday

Trump's New Restrictions for Cuba Revealed White House Confirms Trump's Speech on Cuba in Miami on Friday

President Donald Trump on Friday is expected to announce plans to tighten restrictions on Americans traveling to Cuba and clamp down on USA business dealings with the military, fulfilling a campaign pledge.

This policy is not only a betrayal of President Trump's "America First" agenda and of his campaign promise to remove job-killing regulations, but will be a huge blow to the Cuban people who will suffer as a result.

The new policies will prohibit doing business with institutions controlled by Cuban military or intelligence and will end the "people to people" travel program, which the Obama administration laxly enforced and essentially allowed tourism.

To do that, Castro would need to do several things, including hold "free and fair" elections and release political prisoners.

Sources have said the president is not planning to close the newly re-opened US embassy in Havana, reimplement limits on USA based money transfers or change family travel policies. The policy calls on Americans traveling to Cuba to use "private businesses and services provided by the Cuban people, rather than businesses and services provided by".

The policy changes also do not seek to close off diplomatic ties, shutter the newly opened U.S. Embassy in Havana, or limit what Americans can bring back from Cuba, including cigars and rum.

In January of 2015, Obama requested Congress to lift a number of trade restrictions which had been instated at the start of the USA blockade on the Caribbean island.

According to the Miami Herald, the new rules also mandate that travelers to the Spanish-speaking Caribbean country be subjected to a Treasury Department audit of their trip to ensure they fall under one of the permitted categories. Republican Senator Marco Rubio, a key player in forging the new policy, was expected to attend along with other Cuban-American lawmakers. For example, if someone in the US has a family member die in Cuba, they can travel to the island nation. The order would allow continued expenditure linked to operations at the Guantanamo Naval Base against the will of the Cuban people and Government, and would also keep the corresponding funds for the U.S. embassy in Havana.

The main rationale for the reversal is apparently based on the violation of human rights that continues to occur in Cuba, such as arbitrary arrests of human rights advocates and journalists.

"I am appalled and saddened by the reports that President Trump will reinstate failed isolationist Cuba policies".

"The oppressors of the Cuban people are the Cuban government who have increased repression on the island against dissidents ... since reestablishing diplomatic relations".

Under Trump's new travel restrictions, commerce with businesses run by the military branch of the Cuban army will be strictly forbidden. This new policy helps them.

That said, with an estimated 400,000 Americans expected to visit the island this year, the White House says that those who have already booked trips before the new policy takes effect, will still be able to visit the island.

Rubio said the changes will be a step in the right direction. The embargo remains in place and unchanged by Trump's policy.
